Help: anyone used Rorty's IRS plans?

Hi guys,

A friend of mine is building his chassis using these plans and has found trouble with one length (measurement) there. Apparently, he had to move the position for tubes RU1/RU2 and RW1/RW2 to the outside of the car by 105mm for each tube (and change the surrounding tubes to match), the reason being that, otherwise, his driveshafts would be too long by 105mm to be precise. On page 6 of these plans, a separation of 308mm is shown between the tubes RU1 and R2, but in his car this is now 518mm. Similarly, on page 8, a separation of 640mm is shown between the tubes RW1 and RW2, but in his car this is now 850mm. He is using the same wishbones and uprights than on these plans and a Sierra axle.

The dimension you're looking for across the uprights is 1360mm, where the bearing housing bolts on, now if you keep Rorty's uprights square to the ground and work it out from there you get 1196mm, so each side is 82mm out.

This is a fair bit less than your friends, has he got the push in type driveshafts? These are sprung loaded so will increase in length off the car.

I'm not fammiliar with Rortys design, but perhaps it was meant to use shortened driveshafts in order to keep the standard Escort track?

105mm is just over 4" which is the track difference between Sierra and Escort.

I'm inspired by rorty.
Made almost the same upright. Only made the shockmounting on the upright stiffer.

Only the frame in the back is avon's orange book.

Placed my Roll centre higher about 100 mm above surface.

Made the track rear 150,5 cm with ET41 wheels. Orginal sierra shafts.

I think that flak monkey may be able to help you there as well as one other who has and is currently building a locost using rorty's plans that I can think of

I had read on here that the plans were for Escort width and therefore would require shortened driveshafts so I asked Rorty about it and got the following response "I looked at the geometry drawing and the rear track (wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face) is 1370mm, using the standard Sierra hubs." I haven't looked further as my build has ground to a halt at the moment but hope this helps.
