Steel Suppliers. Shop4steel
Hi,
I'm still a long way off starting my build, but I have come across a site called shop4steel.com. I was wondering if anyone has any experience
with them. Their price seem rather cheap although delivery is a bit on the high side.
For instance, COLD FORMED HOLLOW SECTION 25mm X 25mm X 2.5mm is £6.80 for a 7.5 metre bar.
The wall might be a bit thick but I figured 5 of these would be enough for the book chassis so after VAT and delivery you're looking at about
£60. Is that good or bad?
I've never bought steel before so please excuse me if I've missed something.
Cheers,
Dave

The price is quite good, it is a fair bit heavier than 1.6 (obviously), but would be easier to weld and a but stiffer.
Ironically, 1.6 is more expensive than 2.5, probably due to the demand 2.5 is used for just about everything.
You chassis would end up weighing about 150Kg's, but if you are not a weight freak that should be OK
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

i pay around that for the 1.6mm stuff, in 20ft lengths. delivery is always gonna be expensive. my place cuts the lengths in two for a quid, so they
fit in a mondeo etc....

The place I use charges £5.80+VAT a length for 1.6 they are in Stoke,I think they give me some discount cos we look after thier phone system tho, but
if you want to take a run down here (about 45 mins from Manchester) I can order it for you and you just pick it up and give the man the cash.
They do have a cutting charge so best bring a hacksaw.
You'd have to say your from my company tho.
Cheers,
Bob

I'm in Manchester so delivery is £20 within 7 days. You can do it for £30 to Ipswich if you dont mind waiting 7 days.

Thanks for the offer, thats really kind of you, but I'm not going to be starting my build for a while yet so I won't be needing it yet. I
just have to much time on my hands and think about these thing far too much!
Cheers anyway.

What does the normal chassis in 1.6 weigh?

my chassis is much bigger than the book and a can still stagger around with it, surely cant be more than 100kg if i can lift it? standard book must
weigh a lot less, cos they can be lifted quite easily.

I actually weighed mine before I fitted the floor (steel 16g), the pedal and steering column supports and it weighed 56Kg's. I suppose with the
additional brackets and braces, the ally bodywork I havent fitted yet, it will probably be below 100Kgs - just. 2.5mm RHS will probably 50% heavier -
perhaps 150Kg's was a little pessimistic

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

My advice FWIW...don't use the heavy tube...it will be a lot more work
I'm originally from Preston and ISTR buying from Markland tube in Bolton, Walkersteel in Blackburn, or Le Bas (in Manchester..?)...there is
plenty of the right stuff out there at the right price........don't compromise IMO

Oh yeah another thing...pet rant of mine...
The book is WRONG.....you do not want hollow section......it is NOT made in thin wall...you need ERW tube....

I found 2.0mm 25x25 easier to find up here in Scotland and it's not much heavier than 1.6mm. My virtually complete chassis is somewhere in the
region of 60Kg's. That includes only the welded tubes with nothing bolted or rivetted and no suspension parts etc. It's just like in the
picture where Ron Champions holds his chassis up and say that it weighs about 35lb's... Yeah right Ron!! Ron must suffer from a form of dislexia
which causes him to under-estimate anything to do with pounds by a factor of 4 or more...
Cheers,
Craig.
