Telescopic half shafts?? - please help

For cars with IRS, do the half shafts have to be telescopic?? Cos when the suspension moves up or down, from my calculations, the distance between the hub coupling and the diff coupling varies! Basically, i want to build an IRS locost, and am having great dificulty figuring out what the rear suspension geometry should be.

Any links / help / advice would be most appreciated.

Ed,

From what i beleive there is little movement in the plane to compress or "stretch" the driveshaft, and what movement there is is taken up with the shafts having a certain mount of play in that plane at the diff end, ie they can slide in and out a little.

hope that makes sense!

Ed,

Yes they do "telescope" - there's give in the CV joints that allows a reasonable ammount of extension/compression. If you're having trouble designing an IRS, then don't reinvent the wheel - there are already plans for it in the Tiger book which have been used adapted on the back of a standard book chassis by several people, myself included.

If you do a few seaches you'll find quite a bit of discussion about IRS and the various ways of doing it. If you need any photos of the tiger back end, there's some in my archive, and I can take a few more if you like.

Kingr was that an RC heli engine or two i saw nestled in the engine bay of the locost model?? (Currently learning to fly a raptor 30, aswell as loads of fixed wing models)

The photos in your archive are just the ticket. Many thanks.

Yes, If I remember correctly, it's a OS 30SX and 50SX from my raptor 30 (now raptor 50 and my JR voyager 50). I've given helis a bit of a rest lately due to it's ability to consume time and money almost limitlessly, but once my car's done, I'm planning on getting back into it. Hopefully I won't have slipped too much in the interim - I flew my simulator recently and didn't have any problems with any orientation, including inverted, so I'm hoping it's like riding a bike.

the lobro joints used on sierra / granada drive shafts have a fair amount of 'float' to allow the shaft to travel tho the suspension arc.

On my car its summat like 25 - 30mm or more.
