We must be lucky in Nottinghamshire.
The sequence I followed was:
1 - Make up own VIN Number
2 - Phone up Insurance Co and insure (using VIN Number)
3 - Drive to MOT station (pre-booked) - no number plates, MOT cert issued on VIN No.
4 - Drive to SVA station - no number plates
5 - Drive to VRO office - inspector not in - visited me at home day after (at no cost)
6 - Looked at only couple of receipts but studied photos.
7 - Phoned me day after with Reg No. so I could buy and fit plates. Docs followed in post.
By the way the Robin Hood method of establishing a VIN No was devised jointly between the Notts Inspector and Robin Hood. As far as the Notts VRO is
concerned you can have any VIN number you want as long it is of sufficient digits.
I didn't get an age related plate as I had used wide variety of parts. If you use the back axle, gearbox, engine and rack from one donor, ie Escort
or Cortina for example you'll get an age related plate. It is quite permissable to modify (and register) the form of the donor before stripping.
Building your own chassis is irrelevant.
