How does the solar power thing work? Or is the light given off by welding sufficent to keep it working? Don't want to start welding and it
doesn't react.

Solar power thing is actually a bit of a misnomer its got a tiny battery in it as well -- don't store it in the dark.
I think the technology was originally military to protect from atomic bomb flashes.

I have a hand held mask but find after a while the screen gets pocked by weld spray - I assume the screens can be replaced?

You should be able to buy new screens, but if you can get a B&Q mask for £10 or so, it's probably cheaper to get that.

You can get anti spatter front screens to protect your green filter. My local welding factor sells them starting about 50p each depending on size.
