Chassis steel
bought my chassis steel this morning. I had never bought anything from a stockholders before, and as such was a bit apprehensive. The fella who i
dealt with was really pleasant and helpful, which was nice as I now won't hesitate to go back and ask any q's. It felt really good driving
off from there with the first really significant purchase of the build firmly tied to the pickup!
Price was ok too, i think. 60 (though this does not include sheet materials)

I know that feeling. seems wrong to have steel delivered to your house! price was about what I paid 3 years back

It's like when you first go in one of those adult book/toystores......that's a very apprehensive time..
Or so I've been told...

60 quid? thats a bit pricy
i paid 46 quid for 8 lengths of 1"x1" 16g, 2 lengths of 3/4"x3/4" 16g and 2 lengths of 3/4" 16g tube delivered
mind you, depends where in the country you are i suppose
but nice one on starting the build - it's very addictive once you get going and time just dissapears.

I have heard varying prices too, but it was easy and convenient. I plan to cross brace the chassis a bit and use thin steel sheet instead of ali.
that should save some money
MY problem with the build is I have nowhere to work untill the summer so i am trying to do as much as I can without the donor. so far I have tina
hubs, grp body work, chassis steel. will be cut in a week and welded up at easter, suspension is next I think

One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't take a picture of the small heap of steel before I started cutting. I'd like to have had a
'start to finish' set of photos to brag about!

dont do what i did!!! 22g steel is not easy to weld to the chassis, blown loads of holes in it!!! rivets are the way forward!!!
but yeah, it is lovely and bendy.

25 x 2 (seamless for susp triangles) 6 m @ 2.21 = 13.26
25 x 25 x 1.5 x 42 m @ 1.12 = 47.04
20 x 1.5 12 m @ 0.77 = 9.24
20 x 20 x 1.5 x 12 m @ 0.93 = 11.16
40 x 40 x 1.5 x 6 m @ 1.75 = 10.50
Total 91.20 = 63.44

I hadn't considered using steel sheet til I read your earlier post on it Joel. I think it is the way to go, its not such a penalty in weight
and is much cheaper, easier to paint and won't ding as bad as ali
I agree on the rivets, by the way. I had sort of decided to rivet, not because of how wise I am but because it had not occured to me that i
actually could weld them

Jst remember not to put the fu1 and 2 in Liam till youve made your wishbones, otherwise you'll just end up taking em out again.

i used my head today, turned the welder right down and it wasnt too bad! but yeah, if its well cut then rivets will looks loads tidier. I cant be
arsed getting a rivet gun now anyway!

they are very helpfull and let ya take offcuts for free if you are either a regular (like me, hehe) or buying loads - offcuts aint owt much, just lil
bits of various metal which comes in handy
