Chassis Panelling
Hey guys, wondering if you can help. Looking to place an order for the panelling material for the chassis. As i'm at work don't have the
details to size the amount i need. Looking to get 2m x 1m sheets of 1.5mm gauge ali. Anybody know how much I'll need?
Cheers Bob

Its expensive stuff, far better to measure each section carefully and then work out the most cost effective arrangement of panels on a sheet. If you
get some stiff card and make full size templates of each panel then you'll have the least wasted metal and you won’t be left sort at the edge of
a panel. The back of the car needs a huge sheet for its size due to it being sloped. The templates will also help when marking and cutting out the
holes for the suspension arms. Most Metal suppliers can also bend the edge 90 degs for you too.
1.5 seems a bit thick for side panels, I'd use 1mm for the sides, 0.5mm for the back panel and rear bulkhead, 2-3mm for the floor, 0.5-1mm for
the bonnet depending on your ability to put the bends in.

Make sure you get "half hard" else it's a PITA to bend.. You also might want to look at what alloy you actually want, some polish,
some weld, some are more corrosion resistant ect etc..
I used 1.5mm half hard for all the car.. (cant' remember the alloy would need to look at the invoice, and it may not be the best choice!).
1.5mm is a bit thick, but it does make really robust panels (if more heavy). It will not ding like thinner stuff..
I did as Mr Whippy but in miniature (Ally was probably cheaper then 35 quid a sheet, so was not so worried about waste).

1.5mm half hard, I used 4 2mx1m sheets for mine, bonnet, two sides and rear panel. Anything thinner and it buckles every time you lean on it. We had
to remove some 1mm from a friends car after it rippled and it was a beggar of a job as the mastic really grabs.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

3003 t3 is the spec your looking for, the original book calls for 3 sheets, if you want to polish it later get the plastic covered sheets, cheaper
without protection. IHMO

I've just had 2 side panels cut and bent U at the top and L at the bottom, think they were about 2m x 35cm (or there abouts) and cost £50
inclusive of bending from a local sheet ally supplier.
