From Chassis to SVA
My chassis is nearly ready for paint and i was wondering, how long did it take you to get from a bare, painted chassis to an SVA ready car?
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

That is a very spurious question!!
Are all of the panels pre-bent? Are all of the bones/bushes etc assembled? Has the bodywork been chopped and finished and ready to bolt on?

does it really take that long? I thought it was just a case of bolting everything together and making the body work.

It won't take that long if 1 week = ~39 hours work on the car
but in real life, I know of at least one dax thats 9 years and counting = ~468 weeks (and he bought the chassis, suspension and body)
as for me, I ordered mine at stoneleigh in 2005 and I'm still building, but Alex got his after me an has been on the road for ages.....

Agreed!
It kind of depends how much you deviate from standard.
Mine took 4 years, that was with using Sierra donor and IRS (before it was common), changing the chassis dimensions significantly and using a
Pinto.
There really aren't that many people who've done them in much less than that and also done them to a good standard *and* done it for a
good price.
It's the old case of do you want it done quick, cheap or well? You can only have 2 of them!!!
Cheers,
James

I rechassised mine and it still took 5-6 months to build and assemble, this did include making new panels and working out a megasquirt
installation.

it took me 14 months to get my car from chassis to sva'd and on the road, for the first half of the build i was working nights so had all day to
work on the car, then started new job and the build slowed sown a bit.

depends how you do it. Personally I bought my chassis over a year ago and its still got nothing bolted to it.
a) I only get home to work on it 1 or 2 weekends a month
b) cash prevents progress on certain avenues
c) I specced a weird selection of parts so I have now stripped 2 complete donors and nearly every part has to be electrolysed, cleaned, sprayed
etc.
If you bought a chassis with all the mounts to build a book locost, bought the wishbones, uprights etc froma refurbed supplier I bet you could do a
standard book 1300 quite nicely in 2 months.

I got my chassis 18/10/06, failed SVA 12/5/08 and passed re-test 27/5/08, Registered 1/6/08. So thats 17 months.
Or are we talking weeks of actually working on the car, ie. 168 man/hours= 1week? In which case, it was about 4-6 weeks.

I bought mine part-built (rolling chassis)in feb '04 and passed SVA feb '09!
I had to strip it right back and start again as previous owner had totally bodged the ally panels etc.
I only worked on it one or two weekends a month and didn't touch it at all for 18months while I had an extension/bigger garage built. there were
further times when I wouldn't work on it for a few months or so. In fact, if it wasn't for the imminent arrival of IVA giving me the
necessary kick up the backside, it would probably be sat in the garage now waiting for me to finish it!

i bought my chassis in 2003... not really much more than a rolling chassis at the minute. however, engine is sort of in (needs a bit of adjustment to
get the engine mounts in right) gearbox mount needs some help, all i need for the axle is my side gears re-cut (hopefully...) electrics, plumbing, and
should be good to go...

Bought the house in early 2000 & started the welding course.... collected bits from then on...
still not completed the chassis, but i'm damned close
the car has undergone some changes - like de-dion rear end and changing the rear end to look more caterham.
Its a labour of love (and boy do i hate it at times).

I found that the chassis was the easy bit, the rest of it was a lot of fabrication. I'd say that the chassis took 1/4 of the total time. That
said, it depends on what you buy and what you make.

Total 450 hours over 3 years.
including 6 weeks to strip donor and 10 months cleaning all the donor bits, slowly.
Then 2 years building.

Took me 42 hours to fully make the chassis, and 640 hours to do the rest!
