zetec misfiring..
My car has started doing a stupid misfire thing.
When i came back from detling it started running on 3 cylinders, kept going slowly to get to a layby (on the M20) it cleared itself so i kept going.
Then it did it again after about 20 miles. Pulled over kept it running bonnet off, had a look and couldnt see anything obvious. While i stood there
it cleared it self so i set about by way. It kept doing it, pulled over and it cleared. Got it home the back roads and it didnt do it any more.
Now, changed the plugs checked the carbs etc. i put a different map on it yesterday before i went to cars on the green. Perfect all the way there.
Then on the way home the bastard did it again and completely died. Managed to get it going and it ran fine all the way home?
Any idea's??
Im gonna put a set of leads and maybe a coil on it. I need it sorted or it isnt going to stoneleigh!!

Sounds like the coil pack to me. Had similar problem on my old 2litre zetec.

I had this problem so could be a chance its the same, turned out to be HT leads. They were a new set but unbranded, i changed to a proper set from
fords and it ran fine.

I had this problem also, a new set of plugs did the job.
They are very sensitive to plugs, leads and coil packs.

It seems to be heat related aswell. May just be a coincidence but has only dont it when it was warm.
Coil pack is 101 quid plus vat from ford and dont want a pattern one.

My injected zetec did something similar. Took a year to find the pre-filter for the Facet lifter pump to the swirlpot was almost completely blocked
and the swirl pot was running almost empty most of the time.
Facet pre-filters = spawn of the devil!

Dan, euro car parts supply the vestion coil packs, they make them for ford in the first place, and are about £35

I would change leads then plugs before spending out on a coil pack.

Might not be spark related. Have you got a breater on your fuel tank? If not you could be pulling a vacuum in the tank. Elliminate by running with
the cap loose and see if the problem goes away. Other posibility is something getting sucked into the pick up pipe.

You can checkout the tank vacuum theory quite easily - next time it misfires, stop the car, leave the engine running, and undo your petrol cap. If
you hear a loud 'chuff' as air is sucked in then your tank may need better venting.

My Zetec engined, Quantum Extreme was doing this over last few weeks.
I plugged laptop into the Omex ECU and drove it until misfire came back several times.
When it was misfiring the ECU said that the coolant had dropped to minus 13 degrees C, this was making it think the engine was cold and going onto its
cold start up map. Ie; Richer mixture.
When misfire stopped it was back to 89 degrees.
New Omex coolant sensor £22.00.
Hope this helps. I know I was pulling my hair out trying to find it!!!

I've had dodgy connection to my fuel pump that used to make the car cough on occasions; I could never get to the bottom of it until it
completely stopped one day. I re-wired the fuel pump and it's never done it since.

I did wonder about the tank vacuum but it never chuffs when i have a good run.
Trouble is i need a hot day and a good run down the dual carridge way to try it out. It hasnt done it on the back roads. Only on the motorway/dual
carridgeway.
I must admit the fuel pump was wurring away like a good un when it did it sunday when it should have been up to pressure already, didnt think
anything of it as it does that now and again.
Just managed to get off the A14 and had to stop in a right arse of a place!

I've got a spare coil pack in the garage if you want to borrow it to test?

Could the fuel be boiling/vapourizing in the pipes/carb???
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
