welding 12mm OD threaded insert into 19mm tube - will it fail?

Before i completely mess up thought i'd check with you lot.

I want to weld a m8 threaded insert that is about 12mm OD into a 19mm lower transmission tunnel tube. In my view it will be fine as it will be completely welded in so the tube hasn't really got a large hole in it.

Will i be ok?

You want to put a 12mm insert in a 19mm hole?

I could easily turn you up a 19mm od m8 threaded insert and that could be plug welded on the side as well as around the edge if needed.

or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Cheers

Rich

wrong end ....

M8 threaded insert has an OD of 12mm, i want to drill a 12mm hole in a 19mm tube and weld the M8 threaded insert in.

The question is - will this seriously weaken the 19mm tube? My view would be no as the threaded insert (when it has a bolt in) is essentially a sold lump of steel therefore no reduction in strength.

Just want to check before i do it.

Is it 19mm tube, or 19mm solid bar?

Ah, I'd say it would be fine too if it was fully welded.

knew I'd be wrong

It will be like a threaded crush tube welded in and should not create any problems for the tube it's welded into.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

welded all the way round, I'd have thought it would be fine. Its like having an 8mm hole in the tube, except the hole is reinforced by the bush and weld.

well if it fails and my gearbox ever drops out i'll let you know

(the gearbox is also supported by the 19mm tube over a 2 1/2" length not just the bolt)
