how high is your roll cage?
how high above the base of your chassis is the top of your rollcage? i am just blowing the dust of my old copy of autocad to install on my laptop to
design the cage, but as a starting point i just want to work out the average height. i am trying to keep it as low as poss because i have seen some 7
alikes with what looks like scaffolding stuck to the chassis its so high. i am limited being 6'2" though.

Best way is to sit in car and get someone to measure your head plus helmet height and add 2 inches. Mine is 40" high.

ordinarily i would agree, but i am building the cage and attaching it at a very early stage of the build and making it an integral part of the
chassis. the chassis asn't actually rolling yet, it has no seats yet either. but 40" sounds about right. maybe i'll go for 41 just
to be on the safe side.

proper way to do it, is get something like a length of wood/pip/tube, and lay it on the bonnet. sit in the car with whatever you'll wear (eg
helmet) and get a helper to hold the back end of the wood etc up, so it still rests on the bonnet. it should be high enough that your head is under
the line. that way, if you do roll, the car should rest on the bonnet and roll bar, and your head should be clear

i suppose with a bit of imagination i could roughly figure out where the seat base will come to and then get swmbo to measure where my helmet comes to
when i sit on the floor with my back against the wall, then transfer that measurement to a bit of wood that would represent me, and work from there?

Not strictly true.
I know we're not talking about MSA regs here, but let's stick with that anyway.
The line should be between the top of the roll bar and the front of the structure of the vehicle. In a Locost or similar, this is unlikley to be
either the bonnet or the nosecone.
It's more likely to be the chassis member below that.
For the purposes of calculating roll bar height, that makes quite a difference.

If done right then it will be comically tall... but at least you know it will work!

It's a difficult one as cages that look good are rarely effective.

its a full cage that i will be building, not just a roll bar/hoop.

Then you just need helmet+2inches to a line drawn between the front and rear hoops.
Not easy to estimate without having the seat+runners sorted unfortunately.
