Haynes roadster rear end mods

I couldn't find anything on here by searching, but if it's been covered before, please tell me and I'll search some more!

I'm quite set on a Haynes roadster, and it'll most likely be built using Sierra components.

The only thing I'd like to change is the rear end. I've never been a massive fan of the trunk-like shape of sevenesques.

I'm after making it more round. I guess the closest to what I'm thinking that's in production that I can find is the Quantum Xtreme rear end.

I don't have a problem making the bodywork myself (might struggle to make it out of ally, but fibreglass isn't a problem), but my question is regarding the rear bent round bars fitted to the chassis. Can these be modified to be long-swept bent rails instead (i.e. just an arc), rather than having two distinct bends?

I understand that the fuel tank may need to be modified (or just reduced), but are there any other considerations that need to be made before changing the rear profile?

Cheers,

Pavel

there is actually a chap over on the haynes forums that has used a quantum extreme rear fibre glass tub on the back of his roadster with quite a bit of success. cant remember his name even though i gave him a wiring loom at exeter show :s

without pushing the ebay kits available , if you have a flatpack kit then the kit can be supplied without the round tubes for the rear tub area, basically if you intend to fit a GRP tub then the round tubes are not needed & the kit comes with alternative box tubing for securing a GRP tub.
Or if you are looking to make your own tub then I can work "with you" to supply whats needed for your own design.

Cheers guys,

I'll be building this either from off-cuts (i.e. from scratch) or (more likely) from the ebay flatpack kit, as I mentioned in another post, so the logistics of removing the rear bars isn't a problem.

I was just after information as to whether it affects anything else other than the bodywork (i.e. structural or impacts some other system), and whether somebody has already done something similar so I don't reinvent it.

Thanks for the answers!

Pavel

If fitting a GRP tub to a Haynes Roadster chassis then you don,t need the round tubes, as previously said, also the "Book spec" tank won,t fit, tho you can alter the drawings for making a tank to fit.
Also the book spec roll bar back braces are repositioned down to the lower chassis rails instead of going to the round tubes, in my opinion this creates a stronger back brace.
Quite a few Roadster builders have built their chassis,s this way, me included.

Hi, Im building/ modding my haynes chassis to take a quantum rear end.
its not difficult the rear tubes need slight repositioning and you have to give some thought how to mount it.
mines coming on nicely but oh so slowly as i dont get much time on it at the mo.
have you found a rear tub as new ones cost more than a chassis! got mine s/hand for £75 off the bay.
i have pics on picassa google thingy but my laptop blew up so i lost all the links
i must try and find it lol
any way good luck you can im me with specific questions if you get to doing it

*GULP!*

780 quid for a rear tub?
I was hoping to have a roller for that much money!

Right, so those rear bars aren't structural and can be modified to suit whatever rear end I decide to have?

I think I'll make my own! Won't be quite as curvy as the quantum one, but I'm thinking of cylindrical with flat sides. Easy to make out of ally, plus it won't cost very much!

Speedyxjs, I bought a Mini Pickup once.. I'm fairly certain that had a smaller truck bed than yours does

Just remember that you will want something suitably strong to brace your roll bar to, unless you are happy with the standard 'chocolate teapot' unbraced item.

Not sure what "chocolate teapot" item you refer to Mike?
The tubes that Pavel is looking to remove/reposition are there to "support" the book spec ali rear tub,
The fitment of a GRP rear tub has a different arrangement at the rear of a "Standard" chassis due to the GRP tub being designed to attach to the chassis in a more self supporting way....
The support of the Roll bar & back braces are all attached to the MAIN frame of the chassis.

hth.

cheers
