Chassis weights

Having a bit af an argument here (thanks to an evening watching Mark Evans build his Cobra).
As a rough estimate, how much would a Cobra chassis weight (think his was a Pilgim wasn't it) and how much would an average 7 type chassis weigh?

I am assuming the Cobra build is along the V8 route jag diff axle etc

Depends on the application realy if your going to race it will be stripped for lightness if on the road loads of grunt and plenty of luxury screen , armchairs etc the bodywork will be a lot heavier than that of a seven type

Why I asked is in one of the early episodes when he bought the chassis back to his workshop they seemed to be saying 4 blokes were having trouble lifting it (the bare chassis that is). Could have been a bit of acting to camera.

I would say my Cobra chassis is around 90 kg - wife and I had no trouble lifting it and it weighed very much the same as my Locost chassis does.

Total car weight with Chevy 350 with CI Heads and water pump, TH400 box, all round Jag suspension (Horribly heavy), heavy copper radiator and full leather interior and 40l of fuel is 1250 kg.

I could easily knock off 300 kg by changing front suspension to Locost style, using Ally heads, water pump and radiator and careful selection of wheels and tyres. Rear wheel and tyre must weigh at least 30 to 40 kilos as I struggle to lift it to fit it. Front suspension with CI Brake calliper complete must weigh about 50 kgs a side at least.

So - a cobra could easily be built down to 900 kg and maybe if you lose the windscreen and the incredibly heavy Jag brake booster and take even more care with weight saving (Boot, bonnet and doors very heavy as well) 800 kg should be achievable.

Damn - why did I type this - its got me thinking Damn you Ivan - stop it now!!!

Oh - another weight saving, much smaller alternator and battery - and light weight starter motor - STOP IT Ivan!!!

I wouldn't have thought that the chassis would be hugely heavier than a typical Se7en frame... 30-40% up (maybe).

The Ultima chassis is probably comparable to a Cobra in terms of bulk and I can (well, used to be able to) lift mine on my own.

Playing to the camera then, suspected so, still an enjoyable series though especially when it's Sunday and peeing down and they show all the episodes back to back

Picked up my latest project at the weekend - a Pilgrim Sumo Cobra replica. Its at the rolling chassis stage with Rover V8 fitted and plumbed in.
Anyway, it uses Granada donor components such as rear suspension arms, diff, driveshafts, brakes, front uprights and hubs, Sierra steering rack and column. Up front it has bespoke double wishbones with spax coilovers all round. So, w.r.t donor parts weight, it'll be similar to those for a Tiger Cat. The Rover V8 is also similar in weight to a Pinto.
Tiger give the weight of a pinto engined Cat with screen etc. to be around 650kg.
Obviously. the Cobra chassis and bodywork is more substantial than a 'seven's' and the wheels, seats exhausts will weigh more too.Even so, I cant see all that adding up to much more than 250kg over and above the Tiger's. So final weight of the completed car should be around 900kg or so.
