xflow bits identifying...
Hi guys,
Just a few questions with regards to my xflow engine.
1. what is this black bit at the top and what is it missing where the hole is?
2. which is the fuel in and which is fuel out on the pump?
3. what is this bit with the nut on it? i'm guessing a sensor of some sort.
4. where does the vacuum pipe from the dizzy go?
5. while i'm at it, i was testing my starter and i can get the solenoid to fire, but can't seem to get the motor to turn. I've been
trying with direct power from the battery but nothing..... any ideas?
Thanks,
Andy

#1: this is the crankcase vapour vent (there's a valve that plugs into this hole that lets pressure out and blocks any flames going the other
way).
Originally this would have been connected to the inlet manifold to get rid of crankcase oil vapour.
#2: I *think* that the horizontal pipe in to cap is the inlet, and the vertical pipe is the outlet.
#3: oil pressure switch.

1)Crankcase breather - insert a bit of pipe from the breather into a collecting bottle, the locost option is a plastic coke bottle
4) Vacuum come from the inlet manifold
Are you earthing the starter properly?

Try the starter motor on it's own ie. not mounted to engine/gearbox. If it spins then check you can turn your engine over by hand (easier with
the plugs out.) It's either a duff starter motor(assuming you've earthed it) or engine might have rusted in bores slightly if not used
for some time.

If you do the vent crankcase breather to a catch tank, don't whatever you do put the original valve back in, there's no vacuum to open it
so you end up with oil everywhere but the catch tank

is earthing the starter to the battery acceptable or does it need earthing to the chassis?
I was trying it loose from the car, i know the engine turns over fine, and you can turn the motor by hand also...

Yes. Bolt one end of earth lead to starter other to batter neg. Battery + to starter terminal. Sounds like you've got a duff starter. Just
done all this with mine and starter was fine but compression test gave
cylinder
1. 40 lb/ft
2. 110lb/ft
3. 120lb/ft
4. 120lb/ft
cos no. 1 cylinder gone a bit rusty. So looking at an engine refurb. Think a duff starter would have been preferable.
