Having built a dinghy out of plywood with a layer of fibreglass, I must say i'm impressed beyond belief as to how strong you can get a structure out of it. And this was 1/4" thick (thin!) ply..

I reckon a tub for a car, glassed on both sides could be made strong enough to work...

*ETA: mind you, I'm still dubious about that car!

It's Ford based as it says in the ad, not Triumph based

Probably not such a bad buy as a donor for £500 - it even comes with bodywork

Africar

http://www.oldwoodies.com/feature-africar.htm

a disaster as a business but a triumph as a concept. He designed them with huge ground clearance, long travel independent suspension and a very wide track so they could follow in the truck tracks (unlike say Landies that got stuck)

Probably worth £500 for the parts you could use.

Could be TJ Hornet. I think I remember these had a ladder frame chassis and plywood panelling with some fibregalss 7 style body parts. I seem to recall you could buy the chassis and some parts and a set of plans for the plywood bits.
I looked at one for sale at a salvage recovery yard and listened to they salesman telling a punter it would be worth several thousand when repaired! they wanted 2.5k for the suspension and body damaged car.
It was worth £500 for bits as it stood and about possibly 2k repaired. The guy looking to buy it for himself and his son as a project thought it was a Caterham! A mistake the salesman seemed keen to exploit as he said it wasnt a Caterham but was a similar sort of thing!
