Chassis welding.

Hi guys,

Thought I'd put this as a separate topic, just want to know if people tack the whole chassis first, then weld up fully, or do a complete weld before moving to the next stage?

I planned to tack all then fully weld, is this the best approach?

Personally, I'd tack as you suggest, then weld part joints at opposite ends in turn to prevent putting too much heat into one place and causing distortion,

Totally argee with above. Not a good idea to weldwith out tacking first..

As above, If you try to weld as you go, with out a jig it will come out bannana shape.

You need to tack, then when everything is in the right place just weld one side of the join, move to the opposite side and gradually work your way around, visiting each join 4 times.

The aim is to not overheat any area or It will distort.

personally i find fully welding the bottom section up fully then working up in sections far better for stopping distortion as you can check and measure up as you go.

caterham make their chassis up in sections on individual jigs then stick them all together, and they do it that way for good reason.

Fully weld bottom chassis on the table the welD in sections.

That's how the book suggests
