Does anyone know where the gear sensor is on a ZX9R engine?

There isn't one on my 1998 c1 zx9, is the gear indicator switched by the actual gear changes? or does it use RPM and speed to tell you what gear
you're in?

Gear indicators I've seen use a combo of speedo, RPM and neutral light signals to calculate what gear you're in.
