Side protection bars - what material type / size
My car currently has two roll over hoops. I would like to add a side support bar from the hoop down to the side of the car (going forward to just
below the dash). The side bars will need to be bent by around 20 degrees. Qustion is, what spec of steel tube, and what size (dia, and wall
thickness).
Thanks.

Defo CDS. Same spec as recommended for rollcages. something around 35-40mm should look ok. 45 is standard cage size but quite thick for side bars,
might look odd.

main sections of a cage need to be 45mm as per MSA but additional items can be 38mm and im 99% sure door bars can be 38mm.
if its like a Radical, where the bars from the main hoop goes forward you would need to double check the MSA Blue Book as I think these would
constitute part of the main ROPS, but if youre never going to compete in the car, then it doesn't matter.
if the bars are to be bent though, they ought to be thicker than if a straight run imho, as any unsupported bend ie not triangulated, will be weaker
in the event of a shunt

Anything would be better than nothing.
You just need to assess what level of protection you want.
If you make it invulnerable, all shock will be transmitted to the chassis and the chassis will fail.
By this time, the acceleration imparted to your body may be deadly.
Just mi humble oopinion.
