Shall I buy it?
Early next year I'll be selling my Avon and as an interim car (due to funds), I'm going to build a locost fireblade or Robin Hood
Lightweight with a fireblade engine.
I have just been offered a book IRS chassis, bones, Sierra diff and shafts and a few other donor bits for £200.00.
Anyone any opinions, ideas, experiences?
Or should I hold out for the lightweight which is more of a full kit for £1K?

I'd have it, but I don't have a grand. Come to think of it I don't have £200 so I guess I wouldn't. Not much help, sorry.

That sounds like a decent deal! But watch how much work has to be done, like the steering rack/column mounts etc.

Not sure about the rack mounts or column mounts, but I can tack and have plenty of friends who can weld - looks like I'm buying lots of
christmas presents in exchange for future favours!

I'de buy it and give the robin hood lightweight a miss,the lightweight i saw at exeter last year looked like my 8 1/2 year old had cut folded
and riveted it.

Yeah, looks like I'm gonna go the locost route.
Only problem is I may end up on here in the bloody chassis section for quite a while - something I never thought I'd do.
Should be fun though...

Hi Pat.
You have two options.
1st I start writing my christmas list
2nd I could enrole you on my welding course tomorrow night
Just buy it you know it makes sense (need to check the weld quality)

Oh, forgot to say the chassis has been built by my mum's boyfriend (don't ask) and he used to weld so it should be fine.

Is the IRS conversion a one-off or was it based on an Avon/MK etc?

Update:
Went to see the chassis and it isn't IRS - never mind. It is really well made though and is a very good book example.
I picked up all the other "bits" though and will be picking up the chassis next week.
Also, got it all for free instead of £200, as long as I take the guy out for a spin in it when it's done - bargain!
Got the front bones, bushes and all new ball joints, a brand new nose cone, full live axle & brackets and a prop shaft.
Building the thing on a budget, do I stay with the live axle or go de-dion?

P.S. All the welds have been ground flat on any edges where panels will go!
Now, who wants an Avon?

Sorted - will modify the chassis to take the GTS de-dion, but keep the free live axle for now. That way, I can upgrade to the de-dion if I don't
like the live jobby with minimal ease.
Will have to keep my eyes out for a diff though.
