Roll Cage Steel CDS v CDW
Just a quickie...
I'm trying to source some steel tube to make some side impact bars for my MK
I see that 2" CDS tube with a 2mm wall is the minimum requirement to meet regs (I'm not racing, but would like it to comply, in case)
Now I have rang a local company and asked for 2" CDS with a wall of 3.2mm
And was told that they do a 'cold welded tube', which I'm assuming is CDW tube
My question is... is this suitable for roll cages? Or does it have to be CDS?

nope anything welded isnt any good, its needs to be drawn and seamless.
ETA - thats for MSA blue book. there are no requirements for cages that arent being raced, although most would recommend CDS anyway, there's a
good reason why the MSA bluebook demands it!

My understanding is CDS for cages. I believe welded can fail at the weld line if bent/impacted.

Your only option for MSA compliance is CDS. Consult the Blue Book (it's online), deciphering what you need (road going, Mod Prod., Libre,
Whatever).
CDS is available in hydraulic and mechanical specifications. You want mechanical.

Also get it pre-bent, have a look for tubebender on eBay, draw out what you want send him a mail agree a price and await delivery.

Yeah another shout for Tom at tubebender wether it's just supply tube or supply and bend, he's the guy to use

Am I looking for the wrong thing, ebay returns tubebender as located in the united states?

Yer I had seen the stuff he's selling.
I may drop him a message and see what price he comes up with, only 'problem' is he only seems to do 2mm wall.
I know this is the minimum required by the msa, but I'd have like a little thicker if possible.

Thicker = stronger
When it comes to going wideways into a lamp post I dont want to be thinking 'should have got the 3.2mm wall!'

When it comes to going wideways into a lamp post I dont want to be thinking 'should have got the 3.2mm wall!'
If its good enough for racing, I suspect its more than suitable for road use!. If designing from scratch I would just make sure the cage design is
based around road use - ie be more concerned with side impacts that rolling.
