Steering Rack Selection

Hi Guys,

I'm going through trying to source parts for my project. I'm going to be building a Vodou plans based MX5 Locost. I have just completed stripping the donor and trying to organise what's to be reused, sold or scrapped. I've just measured the standard MX5 steering rack and the pivot joints for the steering rack are going to be, best case, 40mm each side extended past the top wishbone pivot joint. I'm reading that this is not optimal due to bump steer effects. I've a few questions:

Has anyone built a car with the base MX5 steering rack?
How much of a problem is bump steer on a car with fairly short suspension travel?
What other production road car racks are suitable? Escort racks still appear to be popular. Suspension pivot points are between 496mm (Bottom) & 684mm (Top).
I've read that if the steering rack arms are straight when the car is fully loaded and stationary then bump steer effects are reduced. Is this the case?

my aim is to build my own locost wether it takes me a week or 10 years to get started, i'm sure i will sometime
