Starting to get confused now ,is it better to build the chassis 4" wider if useing a sierra donor .And is it worh useing the axle from the
sierra or better to find one off an old cortina. If useing the sierra axle is there a lot of mods needed to the chassis, please help need some sort of
direction to head in.

its a long story really mate. The sierra is independant rear suspension (semi trailing arm), so there is no axle as such.
The choice you must make is wether you will use a book design, with an old style live axle, a full width sierra back end (several ways of doing this
too) or a sierra back end with the drive shafts shortened (this is not too common).
It really depends where the chassis comes from. If purchased, most times it will be designed to use a full width sierra backend, and usually either
dedion or full IRS. If you build the chassis yourself, you can choose to make it live axle if you want. IMHO, sierra running gear is better, as it is
a lot commoner.
Do a search on dedion if you dont know what it is, its a great idea and very simple, basically a 5 link suspension setup much like a live axle but
with the benefit of the diff being mounted on the chassis, hence reducing unsprung weight.

For a car as light as a 7, getting away from a live axle will give you a more pleasent ride on everyday bumpy roads. IMHO, either go with a de-dion
or IRS. Yeah it's more of a pain, but it makes driving the car a joy instead of a literal pain in the backside.

Hi,
I'm coming down on the side of live axles (again).
Having returned from a 700 mile jaunt to the South Coast and back, I can categorically confirm that a live axle is NOT in any way uncomfortable to be
in!!
Get the dampers set right and the right springs - never enjoyed a drive to the south so much. (had to stop to fill up twice though!)
