affordable exotics

I have come up with and idea which could potentialy be very profitable

I want to design and build a car styled and comparable to an exotic but in affordable for somebody that is not a millionaire

The reason this could be profitable is because Teenage guys in the US buy fast sportscars all the time and many have their parents pay for them or take out loans.

If anyone can point me in the right direction on completing this project would be greatly appreaciated

I need info on
designing a car (from beggining to end)
legal requirements to have the car street legal
building a proto type
getting it manufactured
Writting a business plan to present to a bank and investors

Dear Ferdinand Porsche,

please could you tell me........?

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Business rule #1:
Do not call yourself "girlzlover" if you ever expect to be taken seriously.

Business rule #2:
Learn to spell, or at least use spell checking.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you're around 15-22yrs old. How much research have you done that convinces you there's a *real* market for this? Do you know how many kit car makers fail? Do you? Find out why. Also, what's your budget for this undertaking? What timeframe are you looking at... Ah youth.

Probably 99%of the people in the States and all of North America consider kit cars as nothing more than old volkswagons with a body kit and 60hp. Second problem your going to come into is very few guys under 25 or so will even look at a car over here unless it comes from Asia somewhere.
Want to market a car here other than kit then your going to be into thousands of $ per car in manditory air bags ect.
not going to be cheap or profitable.
Look at the new pontiac solstis (spelling) roadster, a beautifull car but gm will not make a penny on it - they will actually lose a mint on it as the production numbers will not be in the hundreds of thousands to make it profitable.

Yes GM are a bit thick really aren't they...

they can the monaro and the vx220 - the first two interesting cars vauxhall have produced since the lotus carlton!

they refuse to put the vx lightning concept into production and instead make the solstice - a car they can't afford convert to RHD

Astonishing.....

....well maybe not so surprising, they did produce the vectra after all...

"oh dear..." said god,
"I hadn't thought of that"
and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic

Didn't John Delorean spend several billion dollars trying to create a car company? He had a great business plan, sell drugs when the car isn't profitable.

In a way you have a point. The US market has stagnated.

As stated above if you say "I'm making a kit car" in the States then most people will automatically assume that you are making a VW Beetle based beach buggy or sportscar or they will think you are making a Cobra replica.

Other kits do have a market presence but has anyone in the States got to the equivalent position of Caterham, Westfield or Ultima or even GTM in the UK?

There is perhaps an opening for someone with a fresh design here but it will probably take 20 years to get to point where you can fill it!

As pointed out above there are other people playing your game. They are called Mazda (Miata), Porsche (Boxster), Toyota (MR2), GM (Corvette & Solstice). You won't be taking them all on tomorrow, at least not with any degree of seriousness!

As for designing a car for yourself check out the following sites:-

http://dpcars.aprsworld.com/
http://www.desicodesign.com/meerkat/
http://www.grabercars.com/Mambosite/index.php
http://www.lambolounge.com/

Regarding chassis you could read kitcaranalysisv2.doc which you can find in the files section of locost7.info

Good luck if you decide to take this further. I'd advise starting with a simple design that you know you can make and leave taking on the rest of the world until you actually have some experience.

I costed up a project for a rich American guy that wanted a "mid-engined supercar for less than $100k..." (he's not the first rich American that's asked me about this, so the idea of an "affordable exotic" is not unique by a long shot).

Of them all, he seemed the most serious (he actually travelled to Scotland to test the LMP, and had a 2nd meeting with me at Autosport International) so I spent a few(!) months putting together a business plan with detailed costings and resource requirements.

The final figure came out near £10m (that's sterling, so roughly $18m), spread over a 5-year period with the bulk of that being required in the first 2 years. The investor thought he could do it on $1m!

Why so much? Well, I'll let you figure that out, but when you start keep in mind that you won't be seeing ANY profit until you're 7-8 years into the project...

Best Regards,

Steve.
