New build.

Hi all, just a quick couple of questions if thats ok.
First some info on me! my last second car was a clio 16v, modded. so a bit of a change in stall for me now.
I'm going to build a tiger avon for the track and old hill climb. maybe i'll put it on the road after but just for now its going to be a track day whore!
So to get started i'm a good welder so i was thinking of building the chassis myself. but do i trust my welding that much? or do i buy a chassis alreadly built from tiger?
Has many people built there own chassis, how much for steel and what is the build time for it?
Thanks again, stuart.
I look forward to chat to you all!

welcome,
I'm currently building an Avon, 'av a look in my archive for photos etc. I decided to buy a chassis from Tiger. In my view, its money well spent. Although they are not cheap, at least you know that your kit is starting from a sound basis. There are going to be more than enough ifs and buts during your build without adding a load more !

"just like that !"

i'd consider other manufacturers than tiger then, especially on the bodywork front. you'll not go far wrong with mnr or mk.

i don't want to put you off your avon project, or defame tiger in any serious way, but it's just worth mentioning if you've not researched the market to any great length.

I,m building mine from scratch, I purchased enough metal to make two which cost £250 delivered, includes all ali etc.

So far I,ve spent about 3 full days building, its not hard work. suspect another couple of days will get me what I could have purchased. Depends how good you are at this kind of thing...... Hacksaw file and vice are all you need.

If you can weld then give it a go. If it all falls apart then you have just wasted a few days and £150, do a good job and enjoy the satisfaction.

Mine is a scratch build and im to the point now where i feel ive really achived something
just waiting for bits to arrive so i can complete the rolling chassis.
If your happy that your a resonable welder then youve got nothing to worry about on that front.

I have to agree with the scratch builders, ( I'm one after all )
The sense of satisfaction and acheivement is a real buzz, plus it means I have more cash to spend on the things I can't do myself.
Not sure if anyone has built a Tiger from the book though, most mix and match.

Stuart,
Have a look in the photo archive of 'Mr Perfect' from the member list.
He is (was?) building an Avon chassis from the book ('though he hasn't posted on the Tiger section for a while.)
It might be worth emailing/sending a U2U to him as no doubt there will have been discrepancies in the book dimensions he may be able to warn you of!

I pondered this very subject long and hard for over a year...Then I realised that pondering wasnt getting anything done.

Less than £100 of material will give you all you need to make a good start. Infact I spent about £40 on 25 mm rhs @ £1.07 + vat per meter and its given me enought material to make it look like a chassis..A big part of the challenge and stimulation is the chassis for me. its amazing how quick it rises from the floor
See link this has come together in 2 Sunday afternoons.

One piece of advise is the old measure twice and cut once .....

Give it a go ,You will never know if your up to the challange otherwise..

The wife asked if I trusted my workmanship enought to drive it. I replied that I trusted it enought to do nearly 170 mph on a bike that I had stripped to every last nut bolt and washer .
