More help please! Master brake cylinder

Obvioulsy I cannot use the servo assisted brake from my sierra donor - so what do I do? Should I get a new master cylinder or can I utilise the piston from the servo? If so how do I get it out ?!!

You don't need to get the piston out.

The complete master cylinder is bolted onto the back of the black servo drum thing.

Just unbolt it from the black servo drum and bolt is straight onto your Indy.

Pat...

Use a bolt with the head cut off or similar to make a pushrod to operate the master cylinder piston, I think that is what you mean.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi all,

Yep as said, remove it from the servo buy undoing the two bolts...

One thing to note is that getting a master-cylinder repair kit seems impossible to get now... So don't dismantle it unless you find a repair kit!! As my master cylinder is not leaking I will do the following:

Clean outside with meths. Then remove the reservoir, as it is full of 'black bits', clean with meths. Then rinse the master-cylinder out with meths.. Wait to dry. Once clean add a little new brake fluid (to protect seals etc), then bung holes until it is fitted to keep out dirt (using old but clean brake nipples)...

Cheers

Dan

Have you tried http://www.brakesint.com ? Find the master cylinder you are using and then click the "associated" button to see if they have a seal kit listed.

By the way, are you sure that the seals are fully compatible with meths? Many solvents can cause the seals to soften and swell up rendering them u/s.

I think meths is safe as it is actually alcohol (Others comments would be welcome!!!). Breaks international list the parts, but they can't get them any more....

AS said ISCMATT Remove the master cyl from the servo using the 2 nuts, clean it up and paint it if u like Then bolt it to your car. Then make up a push rod to go from your brake pedal to the master cyl. A ground off bolt works well if you can make a way of fixing it to your pedal so it pivots.

You can get a proper push rod with a clevis one end and a dome the other from places like Mac1 and MK for a couple of quid.

Bin the servo or put it on ebay.

Thanks all for your help. I now understand, except that I've got to make the firewall hole a bit bigger to get the plate flush, which was part of the reason why I wondered whether I used the old cylinder.

"Full of black bits " ??

Couldn't be the seals breaking up ?

I suspect so, but is it the master cylinder, or calipers/wheel cylinders.....

Buy the way my cylinder fitted with out having to change the size of the hole in the chassis?? I would be supprized if you needed to (although the chassis powder coat/paint might be a little thick??)...
