Tack Welding
just a thought, how many of those crappy disposable bottles would be needed to tack weld the chassis, was thinking about saving money by only renting
a big bottle for a short time....

I get my CO2 from a company that supplies the pub trade but dont tell anybody and dont ask where they are. £5 a refill. Its worth checking yellow
pages etc

I've done my whole chassis on < 4 disposable CO2 bottles (the denser 600g ones). And that includes lots of seam welding too.
I don't understand why people talk about them being crap. Can only assume they must be thinking CO2/Argon mix, which apparently doesn't
last nearly as long.

Probably because they have the gas rate set too high and the o-rings in the torch gas valve constantly leak on cheaper machines. We use a Cebora MIG
to teach the kids about welding and the little bottles last ages if used correctly.
Having said that I've got a big bottle of technical argon for the TIG and that goes pretty quick even at the correct flow.

My welder isn't particularly expensive, it's just your average Clarke 151 TE.
Four bottles of CO2 ~ £33 from Machine Mart. Therefore, disposable bottles are probably the most economical way of welding a chassis... Unless you are
best mates with your local pub landlord.
CO2/Argon mix or Argoshield does make it easier to get a pretty weld, but it's still quite doable with CO2 if you are half competent.
All IMO of course.
