Chassis Clearance (gearbox)

Can anyone tell me if this is enough clearance between the end of the gearbox and the chassis to allow for sideways movement? Its maybe not clear from the pic but the end of the box is in between the 2 upight sections. Its a book built chassis and type 9 box.

Cheers Ronnie....

Fixed your tag for you

Looks a bit on the tight side. All depends what engine and gearbox mounts you use. If you use nice stiff ones (ooerr) you might get away with it...

It looks reasonable - if your gearbox mounting is fairly stiff.

I have pictures just like that! Ditch the sloppy sierra box mount and get a £12 westfield one and it will be fine Rescued attachment Box Clearance.jpg

Doesnt the westy mount need modification or mods to the std sierra chassis mounts?

David

Yes, I had to make a bracket to match the two, but it works really well Rescued attachment Westy Mount.jpg

I fitted the centre bit out of a standard sierra mount, but it proved to be OK when the correct bell-shaped washer is used - it limits the movement.

Thats what I tried first, but blipping the motor made the box chatter on the chassis Rescued attachment Gearlever Clearance.JPG

I fitted a big washer inside the bell washer under the bolt head and it tightens things up nicely.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

With the type 9 I used an Escort mount narrowed by about 10mm to fit the tunnel. I've the same clearance as yours and similar engine mounts and have had no problems.

Thanks. I will stiffen up the gearbox mount. That part of the chassis is still tack welded so will weld it up now.

They ment
It will be noticed that there will be more vibrations in the car.

But as you're sitting in the wind and probably the rest is vibrating in the car you won't notice.
