Square or Round Tube?
Assuming equal thicknesses, etc, which one (if either) offers the best structural strength?

Your question is too open ended to answer directly - i.e. assuming the same wall thickness 1"square will be stronger and heavier than 1"
round but 1lb per foot round will be stronger than 1lb per froot square

round is better in torsion, square in bending, I believe.
Round, you have to cut fishmouths, which I found to be time consuming. Square, you somentimes have to cut compound mitres which is probably worse.
Round is a little harder to weld as you have to weld round the corner rather than 4 straight lines.
Round is lighter for the same overall size and thickness. That's why I chose round tube. I managed quite well with it.

look around you; trees, the bones in your arms - nature favours the circle over the square.
for the same wall thickness and same weight (i.e. same cross-sectional area) round will be stronger.
i.e. 1 inch round with say 2 mm wall will be stronger than square of same c.a. and 2 mm wall - the sides of the square will be approx 0.787 in.
Depending on how you want to use the tube, in tenision/compression, wall thickness makes a difference.
For example a solid tube is easier to bend than a thin wall tubes of same c.a. think bicycle frames ... but here is a limit as you can have a very
large diameter tube with extremely thin walls - think cooking foil - that offers very little strength.
... there is loads more but I ain't best qualified so made generalisation.
In summary, you want strongest and lightest chassis, then round tube is the way to do it. (I think)

Far from it.....and good fishmouthing tool and you are good to go...as said previously compound angles in square are a much bigger nightmare.
I've build built many of both type and often find a combo works well.

This one's been done to death previously.
Any proper engineers out there, who would like to put numbers and algorithms to this?
Thus proving to the general masses that 1" square is stronger than 1" round, if equal wall thicknesses are assumed.
As put already, the square will be a little heavier, but will be stronger structurally, than round in every aspect.

For those who took the time to look at that link above, and understand the numbers, it is VERY obvious that the square is the stronger tube in
every aspect, given same wall thicknesses and od's. AS I put previously!

Syd as always you are 'probably statistically' correct But I would still want a round tube chassis over a square tube chassis and a round
roll bar protectin my noggin I would also prefer round wisbones over square ones.

Just had a look at that famous thread. I can see how you formed the opinion you have, Henderson. It appears that the scot who caused the damage
removed all his posts before exiting the forum. There is a LOT of posts missing that were in the original. CaLviNx or something similar was his forum
