With SVA looming I've started the 'final' jobs list. Today's was finish bleeding the brakes. 4 hrs of pumping bubble free fluid still have no pressure whatsoever!! (no leaks). An alarm in the back of my mind is saying I've made the push rod a little too long not allowing the master cylinder piston to return properly. Is there an optimum length? I'm using a standard Sierra non servo master cylinder. Anybody had a similar problem??

Just long enough...

Def sounds like it's too long.
You should just be able to feel some free movement in the pushrod.

The push rod needs to come back far enough to allow the piston to fully retract.

There should be a fractional amount of free play, say half a mm, before the push rod starts to move the piston in the master cylinder forward when applying the brakes.

After a bit of controrting around in the footwell I think the pushrod is about right. When I give the pedal a good pump fluid wells up in the m/c, is that normal??

if ur using sierra rear callipers, make sure the bleed nipple is at the top, i had to take mine off to bleed.
