oil filter / steering clash
StevenB - 17/6/09 at 07:53 AM

Have I made a daft mistake here?
2L silver top zetec in car for first time.
Lower section of Steering will not
fit by the oil filter engine mount.

Everything else look fine.

Any suggestions please?

Tried search - nothing obvious.

Cheers

A picture would help, but is it hitting the Oil Filter or is it hitting the Engine Mount?

If it's hitting the engine mount (and you've fitted both correctly) then you will need to re-route your steering column round it. It should be relatively simple to do starting by lengthening the lower column slightly.

If it's the oil filter in the way, could you fit a take-off plate and remote filter instead?

omega0684 - 17/6/09 at 08:34 AM

fit a smaller filter? you would cuz have to change it a little more often.

theconrodkid - 17/6/09 at 08:47 AM

renault 5 turbo is the filter of choice

big_wasa - 17/6/09 at 08:48 AM

If its only just fouling the filter you can get smaller filters.

Other way is to put another uj in the down link and suport it with a bearing.

coozer - 17/6/09 at 08:50 AM

I had the same prob, check my blog. I thought about using a smaller filter but was more happy using a remote filter head with the full size filter.

big_wasa - 17/6/09 at 08:50 AM

Be aware that the R5 filter may fit but it is not the same thread as the ford and there have been a few casses of them blowing of with the presure.

One is imperial the other metric.

That said I have got one on mine and it will stay ther untill the next oil change.

I have run with a champion C104 for the last three years. Shorter than standard but not tiny like the R5. Changed every year. Done 15,000 miles including track and sprint without problems..

I dont think a smaller filter will sort it.
It looks as if the filter mounting arm is in play.
Im using standard MK engine mounts with
the Zetec chassis set up. Does that not mean
all silver top owners have had the same issue?

This is taking the gloss off the high fiving and back slapping for getting the engine in.

zetec - 17/6/09 at 09:37 AM

I had one of the first MK with a zetec. I canted my engine over a few degree and this allows a full size mondeo filter. 8K miles and still going strong...That said I made the patterns for my mounts and MK fabricated them as they did not do zetec mounts at the time. I would look at the remote option if you cant sort it using the mounts.

Depends on which engine you have, mine was a silvertop 1.8 but now I have a very late blacktop the filter is in a different position.

There was some variance in the oil pump between different capacities and years.

USE A COOPERS Z107 O/D 80 THREAD 3/4X16UNF HEIGHT 60 ANTIDRAIN YES PRV YES PRV SETTINGS 11-16 HTH DAVID

the filter you want is reno 4 GTL
903cc

reno 5 will blow off as the thread size is incorrect its 20mm thread AND YOU NEED 3/4

works fine you just need to change it more regular.

big_wasa - 17/6/09 at 12:38 PM

Also the oil pump has a differant angle on the 1.8.

i know a couple of people that have used this filter(me included) and never had one drop off,i cant believe the ford mounting is not metric

No problems with mine in the past 18 months, though mine is a blacktop.

Oil pressure is 100psi when cold, and has been tracked without any problems.

I've just gone through this on mine (with Coozers old engine).

The smaller filters still wouldn't fit past the steering so I ended up re-making the MK mounts to move the engine slightly of centre and then fitting a remote filter (although the take off for this is the same as one of the smaller filter).

The carbs are off at the moment so I'll pop out and get a photo after the kids are in bed.

Im not sure slightly off centre would do it.
I will get a few pics myself.

The vertical offset looks abit much to be over come with tilting the engine.

I have standard Zetec engine mounts and
an MK exhaust. So tilting is out as it will prevent
the exhaust exiting under the main top chassis rail.
From the looks of it moving across looks out too.
