MK Indy R Engine Bay Space

Hi All, Just finlly deciding wether to go for an Indy or an Indy R. My one concern is that there may be less room in the engine bay in the R due to the inboard suspension. I plan to fit a 5cyl turbo lump rather than the usual pinto. Does anyone know the difference in useable space between the two?

indy R is designed for a bike engine, the tunnel is pretty small and the inboard suspension does reduce the room a t the front a bit.

the inboard suspension doesnt reduce the engine bay as the rockers and shocks are all forward of the front chassis rails. if anything you should have even more space as the steering rack and shocks are all more forward.

Are you sue the rack is further forward?

i agree, that the front chassis top rail for the bay will be the same, however, your tunnel will be smaller and as a result a problem.

what engine is it you have in mind? do you know rough dimenstions and gear box sizes? I am sure a chap has done a Honda S2000 in an R so there is some room to play with, however unsure about tunnel sizes.

you would also need to do some pretty deep calculations to be able to select spring rate/lbs as the R will be supplied with a BEC instaillation in mind.

The Indy R was not just designed for a bike engine install,it can take just about any 4 cylinder car engine,if fact its Steve Keenan's Indy R that has the S2000 engine fitted,and having been out in that car at Cadwell the other week,can confirm it performs very well indeed.
The engine bay is shorter though on the Indy R,you have a maximum of 26" of useable in lenght in the engine bay,due to the inboard suspension and extra cross bracing in there,compared to 34" in the old chassis,tunnel widths and bulkhead measurements are about the same on both cars.
Just to add,there may just be enough room for your 5 cylinder in there,do you no the lenght of the engine including front pulleys etc.

Thanks for the info, engine I have in mind is a volvo t5 from an 850 + M90 box out of a 960, the rest of the parts will obviously by from a sierra. I guess the obvious soluytion is to take a trip up to MK with the engine and box and have a propper measure up prior to deciding.
