Stiff clutch pedal
bob - 7/5/04 at 07:10 PM

Pinto and type 9 box, used a couple of cables so far.One short mk2 escort and one longer mk3 cortina, both adjustable.
clutch is very stiff and almost undrivable round town, anyone had this and what cables or remedies you lads got ?

bear in mind my chassis is one of the earler ones with horizontal pipe out of chassis.

What's your pedal ratio bob? Can you move the cable connection point nearer to your pivot point or lengthen the pedal arm? Has it always been like that because I had a problem with mine getting too near the exhaust and melting the cable liner. It's inside the outer(der ) and effectively glued the cable solid. I put a new one on and tiewrapped it back.

I had the same thoughts re cable melting, but when i took the cable off its nice and free so thats out.

As youve said the cable nearer the pivot is probably the answer,i'm also thinking of adding some length to the pedal.
I think the newer chassis has a design mod to aid this, funny really as i had no probs with self centreing as others have but i have this.

such is life

By eck Bob is your chassis that old?

I think that mine would be similar to yours. I used the standard pinto cable but connected the other way round. If you are you using the MK pedal set from that era then the ratio is probably the same as mine. Mines ok. Make sure that the cable isn't going around any tight radii. I seem to remember that the cable inner has a coating on it, if it's been close to the exhaust then it may have wlted a tad, but that would be evident on the outside as well. It may be ok in a straight line but binding when curved.

Cheers,

Colin
