Nice one, at this rate you'll be on the road before me! Tell me why did you decide to paint the chassis as opposed to getting it powder coated? Was it to allow for easier wielding?
All the best

The truth is i forgot to ask . Hav u heard bout the MOT queues? My mate got a date lastweek and its for september!! Imagine how long for the SVA

alister667 - 28/5/04 at 05:37 PM

Jay,
The whole testing thing over here is a total disaster. I am very very disillusioned with the SVA process - and the fact that our SVA tester in NI is proud of the fact 'his' SVA is more strict than the mainland's SVA.
The delays/strikes really make you wonder why they don't do the MOT in private garages like everywhere else.
The whole things a ill-thought out nightmare.
Don't mean to depress you tho' :-)

Cheers
Ali

Don't loose hope m8... treat every setback as an opportunity to check everything is correct. We all get disillusioned at sometime, especially when you are so near the end, it must be very frustrating for you. Keep your chin up and keep smilin'

Thanks for the support!
It's getting near make or break time. My Dad checked the valves and found 2 inlet valves weren't closing properly, so he hand ground the shims so they now seal properly. We've had the engine going again since - I can't tell any difference to be honest! This Tuesday we bring it out to a local garage with an emmisions tester. If it is not improved I guess I'll be looking to hire an 893cc engine of someone!!! Seriously the only way forward is to swap engines!!
Thanks again!
Ali

Crazy Jay - 31/5/04 at 01:56 PM

Yesterday i got the diff painted and mounted so the back end looks great . Next job is to get the brakes sorted

alister667 - 2/6/04 at 05:37 PM

Success!! Today we managed to get the emissions within the SVA guidlines!! What did we do I hear you ask? Well We're not entirely sure! We used a tip we got on here from snoopy about using seperate valves on each cylinder to control the extra breather pipes (thanks snoop). We had tried that yesterday but the car didn't run too well and failed emmisions. Last night we re-re-jetted the car back to use the air-socks and the 132 sized jets. After that was done the engine ran really really well, but today we took her out to Brian Quinns garage and she failed the same as before. Myself and Dad played with the breather air valves for a bit but noting seemed to have any effect. Then for no apparent reason she started to pass. We checked the sensor was in correctly (it was), we switched off the car and re-started her. She passed again. We checked the calibration on the machine - it was OK. We tried again - and it kept passing.
The only thing we can think off is that just before she started passing we were revving her up. Perhaps this cleaned out the system, or soot had built up on the plugs preventing them from working fully. We had checked the plugs beforehand and they seemed fine though.
It's all a mystery, but I am thankful she seems OK now.
I've sent off the form for the SVA re-test now there's a danger of her passing. Only problem now is that Newtonards test station is on indefinite strike. It's the only SVA station in N.Ireland.
Maybe I'm cursed or something!

good to hear alister, pity bout those losers striking tho. They shud all be sacked! Is it possible to get it done over in scotland?

alister667 - 2/6/04 at 05:47 PM

I don't know. Because it's a re-test I might have to do it where the original was done. Not sure though.
If I took it to another station it might need a full test again perhaps <quakes in boots>?
