half shaft bolts
aka Keith - 20/11/10 at 09:50 AM

took the car out today and the drivers side half shaft has come away from the wheel assembly. All the bolts have sheared off at the wheel hub end.

Aprt from replaceing the bolts (where do I get them from?) is there anything esle I should check over?

cheers
Craig

Do you know the hardness of the bolts?
I would guess they should be 12.9, someone may confirm this?
If they are too soft then the other side should probably checked in case they are the same?
I got my bolts from Bailey Morris with the prop but I have also bought some from Merlin. If you know the exact spec Ebay can be good.

And VERY expensive - I managed to get some longer flywheel bolts from my local supplier - all 8 for £5.30 when the same bolts on ebay were £16 for 4 !
If you know the size and thread , go to a proper supplier

thanks Claire,

Just been out to inspect the damage further.

1 bolt has sheared leaving a stub in the wheel bit, another has snapped, leaving the head available but bent at nearly right angles when it comes out of the lobro bit.

Any tips for dealing with these two bits of random metal?

Cheers
Craig

Give Claire some food.

ie, weld a lever to them.

or drill a hole central and use a bolt extractor, but you didn't say what the hardness is.

I don't have a supplier anywhere near any more so all special bits come in the post.

Here you go.

Sierra / Cosworth Rear Drive Shaft bolt set - New on eBay (end time 07-Dec-10 20:19:48 GMT)

Use loctite when refitting them.

thanks Paul, bought and ordered a set.

Bitsilly, it has snapped flush with the flange and I do not have a welder, so extractor set it is.

The other is a bugger 2 mm pertrodues through the flange, but it has been bent so I can not extract the bolt. I ssume that mr hacksaw or mr dremmel is called for, but I am worried that I may score the face of the flange.

Yours
Craig

Figure the best mix of the following??
Spray with WD40 both sides and walk away, have a beer.
Hacksaw a groove in the first 2mm, or use a dremmel.
Drill a line of very small holes along groove.
Use a dremmel to join up the holes (or if a butcher like me use the drill like a miller).
Smack a cheapo screwdriver into the slot with a large hammer.
Use a mole grips on the screwdriver and rotate.
It may work!

That said, if you can drill a central hole in it, why not use an extractor?

thanks folks,

Took the dremmel with cutting disk and managed to get a cut into what was left of the bolt in the wheel, then managed to get a small screwdriver to get some purchase and out it came. 4mm or so.

the second had sheared and smeared itself around the flange, so cue an hour with mr dremmel and a couple of grinding disks to take the smeared metal away. Eventually managed to punch the bolt back through out the flange, and bingo all sorted.

Just waiting on the new bolts to arrive and back on the road.

cheers
Craig
