Just got my Indy on the road, all seemed well until I heard a noise from under the bonnet on let handers! It seems the alternator fan is catching the chassis as the engine moves slightly. Has any one tried running the standard Pinto alternator without the fan on?
They put a fan on there for a reason. When You take it off you will fry it. Get a smaller alt from a suzuki half loaf or other such brands of cars and
it will fit no bother at all with plenty space. (could put a five mill spacer under the drivers side engine mount)

indeed, to be quite honest, i'm surprised you managed to get the original alternator in there with it only fouling at times, most people seem to
end up using a smaller alternator,
mitsubishi's and ones from bedford rascals (i think) are pretty common, and a few people use ones from 2CVs, but they need a seperate regulator
and are a bit of hassle it seems
Thanks Guys
Can you fit a shorter fan belt?
its very hard to fit a smaller belt. i tried, any shorter and you have to put the belt in place before bolting the altenator to the engine, which i never managed. i ended up moving the steering column.
Already fitted the shortest belt possible, I think this enabled me to get the original alternator fitted (against the odds!) in the first place!
