Mac on the phone .......plastic tank let go and flooded his garage with 20 quids worth of optimax.

The tank has solid mountings with rubber and we are looking to investigate why it failed as soon as possible. Mac had the car out twice round the houses and then is has just been sat. Our thoughts are that the plastic weld has been attacked by the fuel.


Mad4x4 has kindly loaned a tank to us so we can do the testing needed to get the carbs ect sorted for emmisions & SVA

just to say the car has been round the block twice and was under no pressure at all, apart from gravity.

I am worried about my plastic tank. Do they fail after a period of time or is it usually a manufacturing fault which reveals itself soon after the first fill up?

In other words mine seems ok at the moment but should I be planning to replace it soon?

I think there are a lot of plastic tanks out there and only a few have had problems. It would seem to have been a bad batch for what ever reason.

Mines fine (about 3 years old)and has been carrying petrol for last 18 months.

Its just a bit small

Mine has just failed last week,had fuel in for 4 months sat in garage!!!
Bought mine direct from chris gibbons,so my gripe will be with him.
I have just commisioned a new ally tank from Martin,he CAN weld!
Just a thought, but mine had unleaded fuel in,has anyone elses failed with leaded in?.Just wondered if it was just the unleaded fuel?
Quite why snoopy says its for Martin and Chris to sort out I'm not sure,surely when MK sportscars was split any problems legally stayed with the business not Martin himself!I have no gripe either way except perhaps with Chris,but I'm not going to lose sleep about it,it's just one of those things.

just in case Viper how much are your tanks? Still a good few (insert own time scale here) away from filling mine.

Viper,the" CAN weld "jibe was about plastic welding!
I've never seen you're welding but I'll be happy to examine yours if you like,I've done a couple of thousand hours of welding myself.
To be quite honest I'm not sure why the plastic tanks have failed and in all fairness it could be a bad batch of material.

the sticky stuff has been implicated in the past...

for the record, i am an ASME 9 coded welder and have had a lot of my welds tested, i am lloyds registered in TIG, MIG and MMA.

Hi Viper,
Think I'll take up fishing,got a big bite this time.
Got a few welding papers myself from ages ago,but not to asme standard,welded a few pressure vessels thoughand had them tested .
I'm only a fitter though so I'll stick(MMA)to my hydraulics and bits of wiring as the only welding I've done this year is a couple of JCB buckets with a big noisy diesel stick set in the back of my van.

I have had 2 tanks from PTM (Plastic tank man) and both failed. I have asked on many occasions for my money back but after months of waiting and emailing i have been fobbed off with excuses and still no refund!!!

I bought an ally tank from MK and it was 1st class
