rads
speedthing - 11/9/02 at 09:59 PM

HI guys
what is the best radiator to use with the
pinto engine i have looked at nissan micras
they look cool and compact but dont no if thay can cope with that old pinto.

bob - 11/9/02 at 10:30 PM

Your right the micra rad does look a smart compact set up,but not sure if it will cope.
The bike engine boys seem to like them though.
I've got an escort MKII rad,not fitted it yet as i want to have a look at volvo 340 rad.I've seen one used on a pinto 2litre locost, they hold a fair amount of water and have thermo switch for fan already in rad.
When i finally find one i'll measure up to check.

speedthing - 12/9/02 at 05:40 PM

thanks bob i will have a look for 340s at
the weekend.

bob - 12/9/02 at 06:31 PM

Alun
If you find one let us know what you think, and measurements if you can.
Cheers

I got a new Polo from local trade outlet for £40 which just goes in a MK nose cone. Man in the know at Dunnels says will be ok for up to 200BHP.

DEAN C. - 12/9/02 at 08:09 PM

Hi,I've got a mk2 escort as well.Same rad is in mk1 escort,and most cortinas.
Some of the flanges on the sides need trimming to fit in the nosecone.
Good thing is that if it's not quite cool enough it can easily be changed for a three core job. There are quite a few places to buy these from or any local rad repairer can make them up.
A friend of mine (Rob Lane) has a three core rad and this runs too cool for his Toyota ,so I'll see how the standard escort rad works first. These can be picked up new from autojumbles for about £15.I've picked two up this way.

bob - 12/9/02 at 08:36 PM

I got my escort rad new as well, its a case of suckit and see then but i cant complain as i paid £15 too.

Kevin
Just for the record though, the polo rad is interesting. Is there a specific year and type though?

speedthing - 13/9/02 at 06:38 PM

i have looked at the rad in my trusty mk3
ford capri its H19.5 ins at the cap and
W17ins at the sides(main body of rad) the sides are more 20ins but these can be cut down but not sure about the bottom water
inlet may be a bit tight

You seem to be a little confused about how
the cooling system works. Do you know what
a thermostat is?

And would anyone care to guess how much a new
rad for a Soarer costs? :-(

DEAN C. - 14/9/02 at 11:11 AM

Think you're a little confused yourself!
Cooling is all about capacity. If the rad is too large in capacity the temperature never gets warm enough to open the stat.Rob has to cover part of his rad off in order for the stat. to open. Some of us do this for a living! Doh!

interestedparty - 14/9/02 at 02:21 PM

But surely there is very little flow of coolant through the radiator UNTIL the thermostat opens. How can the quantity of water in the radiator make any difference?

John

DEAN C. - 14/9/02 at 05:28 PM

Hi,yes you're quite correct the engine will warm up and open the stat.
But in the case I mentioned the 3 core escort aftermarket rad was too much for the Toyota 4age engine the same as I have fitted.Once the engine had built some temperature it soon dropped again once on the move. This caused the injection engine
to run far too rich due to the cold start injector constantly running. This would also cause erratic running of the injection system due to the engine temp varying all the time.
Size does matter sometimes!
For most of you using standard or mildly tuned Ford pintos etc. you will have very few problems with any of the rads mentioned.
Pintos etc seem to run fine on polo or escort standard rads, only needing special 3 core jobs when tuned or driven hard.
Hope this clears up my earlier confusing piece as Roger seemed to think I was using a Toyota rad.
All the best Dean.

Cough, as the doctors say. Your radiator can
be too small but it can never be too large.

You do this for a living?
I suggest you change to selling snake oil :-)

Roger.

Well the 340 seems a bit wide to me,i'd never get that in.
I'll stick with the MKll escort rad and if it runs hot i'll get the fan to cut in earlier or make it bigger.

locodude - 15/9/02 at 09:32 PM

Oi!
Just a minute, an argument that I'm not involved in? Never. Right here goes. Believe it or not I run a Micra rad and yes I know it's a Jap! 1700 x-flow, twin 40's etc.... Track day at elvington, 20 min sessions, temp never above 1/2 way. Will do a standard pinto no sweat ( as proved by Tony Skelding on this years Le mans trip).
Chris PTM
Track day whore!!!

bob - 15/9/02 at 09:37 PM

Well i'm glad thats sorted then

One thing though, what the hell is a mira?
Are they letting her out then

locodude - 15/9/02 at 10:04 PM

Ok,ok,ok, post edited. Jesus they don't let you get away with anything on this list!

speedthing - 16/9/02 at 06:14 PM

i think i will go for the micra rad on my
2ltr pinto
cheers mate

bob - 2/12/02 at 08:42 AM

forgot to tell you, spoke to well known engine builder locally some months ago.

He has the same opinion and also said pintos will run on very little water

I'm happy with the MK2 escort rad i got brand new for 15 quid, martini car parts are selling them for £18 now in a box and also sell fans from £12. 07798722366

Viper - 2/12/02 at 07:19 PM

Tuned pinto's or any pinto for that matter definatley don't like to get too hot the power drops away big time...

jollygreengiant - 3/12/02 at 10:22 AM

Personally I would suspect that the thermostat was not working properly if it was un-able to maintain engine operating temperature once the engine was hot, I.E it was sticking open!

wicket - 3/12/02 at 02:01 PM

Is it the 1 litre mk 2 Polo rad ?

Stu16v - 3/12/02 at 02:15 PM

IIRC Yes.
