First off, hello everyone. Been following the board for a while and though it was about time I joined in!

I'm going to be ordering an Indy in the next few weeks. But I'm still undecided about an engine, bike or zetec?

I plan to use the car for the usual weekend jaunts, plus maybe an occasional commute to work in the summer (100 mile round trip), and maybe 1 or 2 trackdays during the year.

For this, I guess a zetec would be more practical, but I still can't shake the idea of a bike engine.

But whichever, it will need to accelerate quicker than my scooby.

Would appreciate anyones views/experience on this.

Hi, I had the same problem.
I wanted the high rev sound (F1) but was afraid that a BEC to difficult was drive in town.
Then I've driven a Indy with a ZX-12 engine and gues what I'm building.
The only problem is the reverse, but I'm working on it.

try and get a ride in both to see which you prefer.

Then start looking for a bike engine

after looking at how easy it appears to fit a bike engine into one of these even compared to a simplistic pinto i think if i do it again i'll deffinatly go for a bike engine

don't rule out high revving car engines, toyota and honda engines are revvy, light and will out accelerate your scooby in a seven. a lightweight zetec/vauxhall/duratec would also be as quick as most bec's with more midrange and top end grunt. then there are the turbo engines, nissan 1.8 turbo (175bhp) cossie, rs turbo cvh or even the mazda rotary.

Not at this moment in time, but if you turn up on a Saturday, chances are there will be a few of each there. (Providing weathers OK) And I'm sure they'd be more than willing to take you for a spin.

I had thought of the Toyota 4AGE. But I guess I'm shying away from "non-standard" fitments, due to then having to make up mountings etc.

I did help a mate build a westy a good few years ago with a 2 litre Vauxhall 16V and that was pretty quick.

Raw Engineering use the 4AGE in their Striker kit.

I went for the zetec as it's easy to live with around town or on the track. With 170bhp I suspect performance is about the same as a Fireblade/R1 BEC. Cost to build is a bit more but it's down to what you want from the car.

Might be worth getting advice from Jasper as the last time I saw him he was thinking of changing from bike to car power. I'm sure he would be able to give a balanced view.

In truth Zetec is right, really depends what you want from the car, I loved the sound and feeling of bike power and the frantic revving but I have also been in some very quick and nice sounding car engined cars.

Zetec's car is lovely and you can pick up a zetec engine these days for a reasonable price.

Thanks everyone for your views. I think I'll have to arrange a trip over to MK to have a go myself.

If your'e doing a lot more road miles then why not 4AGE,i've driven most engines now in Indy's, and I bet my 4AGE will give most BEC's a good run for ther money when it's on the road shortly,it might even be on the track even sooner if I can sort a day out.
If I was going for a bike engine I'd go for a Blackbird first and a zx9 if I needed to keep the budget down,but I must admit bledes run nice as well ..
I must admit though that after driving Martins GT2 on the friday night before Donnington for about 15 miles with Martin following in his van(he was on two wheels most of the time)I dont know if I would fit a Blackbird or a 4 Age in it when I put my order in,sorry I meant IF(just in case the wifes looking)..

PS.If you go for a Toyota ,Mel Coppack at Raw is a great bloke to help you and he willsupply most of your bits to fit a 4AGE in an Indy.
I'll make your engine mounts for a few beer tokens or you can copy mine if you wish,that goes for anyone else too.

Or Honda S2000 engine if price ain't an issue

The Duratec isn't too dear to buy ,its the cost of the bits to make it run !
Anyway dont think it revs as high as a Jap engine ,or does it?
Wonder if a Lexus 200 six cylinder would fit?

If your looking at the 4age then it might be worth a look at the k-series too.

'Which Kit' did a good review of 4-cyl car engines back in June - in the higher ratings were Zetec, K-series and Pinto(!), with 4 stars, and Duratec and 4-Age with 5. They described the K-series as a 'good budget option' because you could keep the original injection system and ECU etc.
I still can't decide what to put in the Striker - the donor's 1.6 Pinto (the only way to stay in budget), the 4-Age (with RAW nearby - the most honest and helpful bunch of blokes you could hope to meet), or a bike lump or ... well, you can dream forever, can't you?

Hello everyone thought I put my pennyth worth in as well, Hello Mr Loo, Im the one who bought your car,
All I can say is forget the car engine and life live to the max and get a bike engine.
You will not get a better buzz in a car engine end of story.
But if your worried about loads of miles get a volvo.
At the end of the day you buy one of these cars for the joy BEC's give it to you and some.
By the way Mr Loo if you build a bussa one next I will have it of you luv yer car and good work bye all

Dont know if you seen the MK GT on ebay with bussa engine.
Starting bid is 9K needs SVA he told me he would do this if we can agree on price
