old newbie question - what is this part called
aka Keith - 17/4/13 at 02:06 PM

having not built my car many years ago, it is getting to the stage where parts are needing replaced, and also where I start to show my ignorance.

I have just noticed a split in the rubber (hopefully shown below) what is this part called? and where is the best place to get a replacement.

cheers
Craig

I hope the original poster dos not mind me borrowing their photo for illustration.

[edit: as usual cannot seem to paste in image - here is a link to photoarchive http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=showphoto&photo=what%20it%20called.jpg

It's a balljoint boot, probably Transit. You can buy them separately these days.

top ball joint.. should be the same as the one on the bottom and will be very similar to ur track rod end albeit a different size

ah thought U were meaning the actual ball joint.

search for ball joint dust cover

The complete part is a Ford Transit drag link, the rubber part is a gator. You can buy new gators, but the complete part is only £10 (IIRC) from a motor factors. You'll have to remove it from the upright to replace the gator anyway so I'd just replace the whole thing. Make sure you keep the M18 nut from the old one as new ones don't always come with new nuts.

If you do not get the whole unit, IIRC the Focus lower balljoint is the same rubber gaiter.
