Best way to fit the top tunnel panel??
Sloan85 - 11/5/13 at 10:07 PM

I fitted the tunnel side panels today with rivets but I am unsure of the best way to fit the top tunnel panel with the aluminium trim. Any suggestions?

I was thinking rivnuts but wasn't sure how well these would work on round steel tubes?

Does the top need to be easily removable for iva or anything else?

Cheers

Yes, rivnuts are the best way - you will need to remove it occasionally - maybe for IVA (I didn't, but that doesn't mean you won't). I have taken mine off about half a dozen times for various reasons.

Rivnuts will work on round tubes, but you will obviously have to drill them square (maybe make a little jig?).

HTH, Steve.

Cheers Steve. I installed it with rivnuts today. Only problem I had was my brand new Silverline rivnut tool breaking on the 2nd rivnut!

EDIT

Just read the comment about the IVA. Why would they want to see underneath? I have plenty of photos before the panels went on so could show those?

Cheers

They may want to see a couple of things:
your handbrake linkage - this has to have a compensator of some description to ensure equality of braking on both rear wheels.
and if you have made the chassis, he may need to see the welding - especially around the seatbelt mounts.

Mine is bent round the corners and just sits there. The sides are put on with velcro, for easy removal. And I've removed it all many times for wiring etc. Maybe it doesn't look as flashy as some, but it is practical.

I prefer the term efficient...

Ive thought about making it a bit nicer looking many times but always have something else more pressing to do for some reason. CTerhams just sit there btw.

Can't help much with this, I did it differently( as bl**dy usual) and made an ally cover that slipped over the tunnel, and was held on with screws in the side.
I can't think why it took me 12 years to finish the car

Neat - ok when you're going for the 'quick' build
