mk indy - blackbirid clutch replacement

Has anyone replaced the clutch on a blackbird powered mk indy - I was wondering if it can be done with the engine still in the car or if it has to come out.

I have also had mixed suggestions on heavy duty springs / kevlar clutch and using extra plates.

Any advice / experience welcome

Hi,

You can do it with the engine still in the car. 20min job max if youve got all the bits.

Have you worn out a clutch? Are you using a standard clutch? I was thinking about changing to a barnet carbon-kevlar clutch but i havnt had any trouble with the stadard one as yet so it'll stay as it is.

the clutch is slipping quite badly so needs replacing - the kevlar clutch is not much more in terms of cost so I'm not too sure to stay with an OEM item or go kevlar.

carnut - what exhaust can are you using on your car - is it the MK can? Mine is not SVA'd so running a straight through pipe which is getting me thrown off most track days

I have a strainght through race can which I use on the road and for tracks where the noise regs are quite slack but for the restricted tracks (unfortunatly most), I have a triumph datona 600 can. Even this wont get t down low enough for the quiet days so I have a db killer that fits in the outlet.

Im also running an airbox which makes it a bit quieter.

Is your engine inj. or carb? What nlet do you use? Ive been looking at going to a foam filter a my airbox sticks through the bonnet quite a long way.

Back to clutchs, the kevlar plates are supposed to be a lot more durable.

PS. Its a good idea to soak your clutch plates in oil before you fit them, that way they wont cook themselves with the first few starts.

I have had a lot of trouble with the clutch of my Blackbird. The small notches on the cover broke several times and damaged the engine. I have changed it and now it works using one clutch plate less.
I have also tried special springs and kevlar plates, now I use standard plates and springs which I renew every season
and for me this works best.

The exhaust can used is an Akrapovic street legal Yamaha R1 and is Quiet enough even in Holland (85db)!

thanks guys for all your help - think i will stick with the standard clutch and will use a Akrapovic can which I can get cheap
