MK Indy R - Zetec and type 9

Hi all

Am I going mad??? I have a IndyR frame (mid build)... intending on running a Zetec black top and type 9 gearbox.

I have just gone to 'size things up' and there is no way in hell its all going to fit.

Based on where the engine mounts are located I can easily work out where the engine will sit, and where the bell housing needs to be.

The bell housing will need to sit approx 4" within the tunnel. Problem is the tunnel is (just shy) 12" .... and my bell housing is a good 13" wide, with the widest part being where the starter motor is.

Doesn't matter how I position it is def will not fit inside the tunnel.

Am I missing something?? HELP

You may find the bell housing isn’t meant to be IN the tunnel, If the indy is anything like my tiger you’ll need a extension on your gear stick to move the position backwards and from under the dash.

Have you bought the chassis new?

Just hope it's not a BEC chassis!

Thanks but that's not it. The engine can only fit in one place which then determines where everything else goes

Purchased new from MK with zetec engine mounts welded in place.

It the tunnel a different width then on a BEC mk indy r? I can't really see how the tunnel could be any wider or indeed shorter :/

It's got me stumped. Will call them tomorrow.

Perhaps they've just welded the mounting plates in the wrong place?

Or had a mix up with your order and welded them in for a different engine.

Does the bellhousing have a lump on it for the starter?

That might need lopping off as the starter doesn’t sit inside the housing. Then you might have room. That’s what you need to do for a Westy chassis anyway.

Interesting... hopefully some Indy owners may see this too and be able to clarify.

I sure hope it's not a issue with the frame as I'm months into the build!

Looking at the pic you posted, same bellhousing as mine, and you remove the huge bit that gets in the way basically. Probably the same for an Indy

Still seems like it would be right on the other side for the clutch.....

Id be cutting the chassis up to get the engine as far back as possible, helps weight distribution and puts the gearstick just where you want it..

You will gain 2" by fitting the panel on the inside of the chassis.

But as kingster said, cut that lump off the bell housing, it doesn't do anything.

Pretty sure the Indy R chassis is totally different to the older Indy,it's all round tube for sure

Got it to fit by cutting a big chunk of the bellhousing off. Its bloody tight though!

I now have a gaping hold in my bellhousing though - does that matter? Eg dust and crap up off the road etc?

Probably not,but personally I would weld a plate over the hole
