Roll Bar Fixings
donut - 7/2/03 at 03:22 PM

How are you lot fixing your roll bar to the chassis? I have seen some dome type bolts that look nice but it's difficult to see what they bolt into. I feel that rivnuts would not be strong enough in case of a roll so i would like the bolts to bolt into nuts...but.... theres no where to place the nuts in the corners as there is a cross member of sorts in the way.

Cheers

been looking at this on mine too. I'm thinking i'll have two longer bolts going straight through the crossmember you mention and two shorter ones just through the plate.

i'm waiting to get my springs in place to see how much room there is.

i think i picked up my chassis the same day as you (i'm gloss black). you seem to be abit in front of me already, i seem to be spending more time looking at stuff and thinking than i do building.

Ahh are you the guy who ordered the gloss black chassis? I noticed you had a van with united van rental on the door (or something like that) I had a van with that in huge letters and i wondered if you were local.

As for the bolts, i think i'm going to have to do the same. Not perfect but better than rivnuts.

I have done all the suspension and i'm just waiting for some top ball joint adjuster bolts then i can put all the front hubs and brakes on. Check out my site at http://www.donut.co.uk/MK_Indy

Andy

If i cant get to you or you to me,do you want me to post those nuts ?

Hi Bob

It's ok you can give me my NUT'S the next time we meet or give them to Jason as he told me he was seeing you soon. I did order some nut's from lolocost before Chris told me about the tunnel sides so i have got some coming.

Cheers Mr Bob

OK mate your NUTS are safe with me.

By the way my roll bar is bolted straight through the steel box section like most i,ve seen

I used M8 rivinuts with domed headed bolts on the outside pair then M10 bolts through the chassis for the inner pair (although I have not yet sourced suitable domed M10 bolts)

We welded ours on.

I too think welding is the way to go.
It depends on wether the roll bar is purely cosmetic or has some function ie seat belt mounts etc. I would recommend bracing to rear corners and using cross piece for seatbelt mounts.
I do know of a car passing SVA with 8mm bolts into rivnuts AND the bar being used for seatbelts with no bracing. (eh PTM!!)
