I have just fitted my modified oil pickup pipe and modified sump to my 2.0L Pinto and noted that the pickup pipe is hard against the sump, the sump looks to have tightend up against the block OK.... is a potential problem ...?

Yes, it could restrict oil flow. You should be able to adjust with some judicious bending I would think.
