Ello peeps,

I need to buy a battery soon as the wiring will be in shortly. I need to know what size/type/capacity/power or whatever battery to use. I don't think i want a bike battery as i'm unsure they would be up to the job time and time again.

THe engine is a 2 litre pinto standard in an Indy.

couple of u2,s should do it

a bike battery wont do it, it doesn't have the cranking power especialy when the motor is hot.

have a look at my pics the battery there cranks a 460hp race V8 and is about the size of a large bike battery, is gell filled so can be laid on its side and cost about £80.00 .
otherwise a standard car battery that will crank your motor is going to be around 4 times the size but cost about half as much...

You could ask a battery supplier for a suitable battery or start by looking up the one for the donor as that is obviously going to work with that engine. Most parts places have the books out on the shelves for you to search by make, model etc. I did that in Halfords, found the battery for 2l pinto sierra and went for the heavy duty version as batteries don't fare so well the less they're used/charged etc. The choice will then be square/spade type battery poles or the round conical type - I've got the square ones cos they fitted my standard sierra loom. You don't need a gel battery any more than in your normal road car - unless you're going to throw it about a lot - but they are more convenient. My engine bay picture shows the final setup.

i take it you arnt using an MK bulkhead panle then bob? I saw one at MK 2day and the battery space is very small! As im now not going for the 11 piece body kit im going to make a bulkhead panle from ali or s/s so will use the standard donor battery!

Hello, Mr state the bleeding obvious here!, but don't do what I did:-

Cortina running gear, 2.0 Cortina battery. obvious.

Forgot that the terminals on the car were now round post ones!, not square! wouldn't fit the battery.

I'm using a battery listed for a 2.0 Cavalier now.

Yep i made my own shelf,its 4mm thick ally so well strong enough.

I think there might be a pic on the archive of it before final fit,must get round to updating that

Just to expand slightly, I suggest you find the battery recommended for a 2 l pinto engined car - eg the donor. Note the amp hour and max current ratings (which are the ones you need for that engine) and then look for smaller sized ones but which the same capacity/output.

I went into all this when I was looking for a battery, ended up with the smallest battery I could find on the shelf. Got it at local Costco store, it's out of a Jap motor, about 2/3 size of Ford Sierra battery £20, turns my 2ltr over no probs. Thing to remember is that the in the Sierra it is needed to turn the engine over on a cold morning with lights and heater etc on, stop 2 miles later and do the same. As long as your engine is in good condition and starts OK I suspect you will get away with almost any 12V car battery.
