Can another enlighten me on how the electric metro fan provided by MK switches on and off when the water in Rad' is hot.

i don't really want to drill into the radiator.

You can get an inline thermo switch which goes in your top hose,give premier wiring systems a call and tell them the size of top hose they supply the joint and thermo switch.
