jimmybond - 12/2/07 at 12:36 PM

Hi everyone, nice to be here.

I am interesting in building a mk indy, but the mk site doesnt provide me with enough info, can anyone answer some of my questions.

1. what sort of build cost can i budget for
2. do you get a build manual, and if so how good is it?
3. can you buy the kit in stages

thanks
James

macnab - 12/2/07 at 12:48 PM

what about the new book, isn't it an indi in there?

stevec - 12/2/07 at 12:52 PM

Welcome to the forum.
Good choice of kit,

Estimate about £5k upwards to build,

The build manual is not brilliant but everything you need to know can be asked on here,.

Yes you can buy in stages, But go for a powder coated chassis and wishbones if you can, I did, and I reckon it saves a pain job painting it.
Have a good look through peoples picture archives and build diaries.
All the best,
Steve,

Thanks for the replies guys..

Is there alot of work in getting the build parts in hape ready to fit to the car i.e. do you have to cut the body panels or do they come already cut etc, as I know some kits are like mechano (westi) and some you have to do the lot.
thanks
James

Hi there

1. what sort of build cost can i budget for?

Ans: yes arround 5-6K dependant on the build.

go around and visit as many shows as you can and see if theres someone local its great to be able to look at another indy as your building yours, i use andy (ash3) as he lives up the road from me and he runs the mk owners club.

oh and hide things from the mrs as she'll moan at how much your spending.

its a good job we arnt waiting for a gts book isnt it, as we will be waiting a long time from payment to delivery lol

zxrlocost - 12/2/07 at 01:19 PM

classic replie haha!!!!!

zxrlocost - 12/2/07 at 01:20 PM

all the kits are like a lego kit with just a little fine tuning

bodger - 12/2/07 at 01:23 PM

Just started building mine, the manual's not great but then to be fair neither are many of the others I've looked at.
If you want a fit part A to part B type build then you'd better look at Westfield / Caterham but you'll pay for it.
It's not that difficult & the head scratching is part of the fun of it (sometimes). As the others have said, everyone else has hit the same problems at some stage & the answer is usually just a post away!

I'm reckoning on about 7 - 7.5K for the build without going mad - but I've gone for the new chassis so that's pushed it up £600 already.

zxrlocost - 12/2/07 at 01:32 PM

and if GTS rings your ring thats all that matters........

Mad Dave - 12/2/07 at 01:34 PM

The standard Indy does have camber gain and is probably very similar to other manufacturers.

zxrlocost - 12/2/07 at 01:36 PM

it was perfect for my fast road driving

stevec - 12/2/07 at 01:45 PM

The only bells that ring for me with GTS are alarm bells.

By the way Mark I presume you will be in your tin top when you help the Indy owner,
Or have you had SVA yet.
Steve.

Forget CalvInX. MK took me around Brands Hatch last year in their demonstrator & it stuck to the track like glue, went so fast it scared the hell out of me & no hint of losing it at the back. I'll be chuffed if I can ever drive that quick.
Most of the guys on here regard MK as a respectable business. I've certainly had no problems dealing with them & they've delivered the goods which is more than can be said for some other businesses.

Catpuss - 12/2/07 at 04:14 PM

Hi,
I spoke to them at Donnington. They said that it was possible to build at a budget of £4K. Though I guess thats using Sierra clocks and cheap dashboard (something you can replace with nice kit later).

As for budget it depends on what you want to spend. I'm aiming for £4K knowing that I will overshoot but if you aim for £6K you end up spending £7K when you see some nice and shiney bits to buy and those extra little flash bits you want

If I hadn't of panic bought a donor I could have got the bits for less. I've got about 1.75 sets of donor parts now and the other bits I aquired at very reasonable prices.

The manual is downloadable and pretty much "guidance" rather than Westfield quality. I'm planning to write a new manual as I go along, mostly as reference to what, but hopefull as some use to other people too.

There are a few build diaries on line but the good ones seem to be BEC based, unless I've missed a few.

You can buy bits individually or a basic or delux kit. The basic kit offers quite a good saving over individual parts. The delux kit in proportion not such a good saving, although still you save a bit.

What you need to add to the cost of bits is things such as postage or travel costs to pick up. When you look at this, buying parts one or two at a time suddenly becomes alot more expensive than you realise.

Best thing you can do. Go talk to all of the kit manufacturers that you're considering and try to arrange run outs, get an idea of their setup and how they work. Talk to owners about their experience but don't ask on here which is best as it's too much of an emotive subject!

mark_mcd - 16/2/07 at 04:59 PM

if you buy a deluxe kit from mk how much extra is the new chassis or is it standard?

i appreciate it's new and all but is it really worth that?

Hellfire - 16/2/07 at 07:27 PM

If you don't think it's worth it, then just go for the Indy chassis. You won't be disappointed.

Having never driven an MK with the new chassis, I personally couldn't tell you if it's worth the extra money or not though.

In my opinion the new MK chassis is worth every penny of the £600,having owned the original MK Indy for over 2 years,I have also had chance to drive the new spec-R chassis on the road and track, not wanting to critisize the old chassis, but with any progressive company they must keep ahead of the competition, the old chassis is now over a 10 year old design, and as we know technology has moved on a long way in that time, the new chassis is a up to the minute design,it has incorporated in its design extra tubular fabrication, giving it added torsional ridgidity, there is inboard suspension at the front, and a completly new rear suspension set up,in fact the new chassis shares only the its exterior dimensions with the old MK Indy, and that was only in order it could share the body work, and still be built along side the original Indy, if you ever have chance to see the extra work, frabrication, and time that goes into the new chassis, you will see where your extra £600 goes, the talk is now how long MK can continue to supply the chassis at just an extra £600!

zxrlocost - 17/2/07 at 09:27 AM

Please all potential Kit Buyers Read Pauls Post properly he says the New kit chassis is excellent but doesnt say theres anything wrong with the old chassis

Mk are just updating things

sorry paul its just that youve given a good write up there which people should start reading posts properly

otherwise we then get the faggot posts like

"Ive Ordered the Old kit should I be worried"

and all that crap!

mark_mcd - 17/2/07 at 10:31 AM

that inboard suspension is like that mnr use?

PAUL FISHER - 17/2/07 at 10:47 PM

It is its own inboard system Mark, and the MNR vortex + does also have inboard suspension, but MK's is designed specifically for the new chassis, and is totally unique to the spec-R.
