Another MK 'finished'!
iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 02:49 PM

Well it has taken a year and two months but it is done.

I know we say these cars are never finished but you know what i mean when i say finished! ( i have some stuff to do after SVA including a shiney new set of bike carbs to replace my (what appears rare) Pierburg carb )

Or at least i think i am - i have a feeling i have missed something. I think its due to working on it constantly and now i find it hard to find more things to do! i keep looking in and around the car with nut covers in one hand and cable ties in the other looking for something i have missed!

I sent off my sva application form yesterday. Any ideas on how long i might be waiting? SVA is at notts.

I would upload some pics but i don't remeber how too i'll put some in my archive hopefully!

Thanks to everyone helped on the forum and a special thanks to MK. Apart from having to wait 6 months for an alternator braket which i found they just needed to buy from westfield, they have been top class and have made the job of building the car a joy, i think i want another one

Cheers to all

Might go for a ANOTHER test drive now

I waited all of 6 days for my date at nottingham! But that was in March...

That would be great! but i'm not that hopefull for it to be that quick as i would imagine now to be a busy time before/start of summer.

welderman - 21/6/07 at 03:00 PM

Summer, ah i cant wait, would help if my car was running though.

Well done though mate on your build, good luck on the SVA.

i have no 'very' up to date ones but these give you an idea.

The car is now finished and sva prepared despite the pictures, there are also items which have changed like the wing mirrors have been swapped fo bike ones etc.

cheers matt

Nice choice of wheels. Looks very tidy.

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 03:31 PM

the alloys are currently off for sva purpose - they stick out to much - and i'm using the old sierra ones with some lovely hub caps !!

I spent 4 hours cleaing it yesterday so i will hopefully get some more pictures to post soon.

welderman - 21/6/07 at 03:31 PM

like those mirrors, looks good in those colours too. Bet you cant wait

whitestu - 21/6/07 at 03:35 PM

Looks great - It is hard to tell fromt he pics, but I'm wondering if the mirrors will pass the field of view test in their current position?

Looks very nice indeed.

Just a couple of points that may be an issue or not. Are the MK Grill's SVAable? Do the headlights dip correctly to the right way? Radius of the air filter edges?

As I say they may not be any issue but worth pointing out. Other people may be able to help say if they are ok.

Steve

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 03:52 PM

The mk grill i would say is almost def not sva and wont be on for the sva

The headlight do dip in the correct direction - they have been modified to dip to the nearside (pavement)

The air filter should be ok as it has rounded edges though it is worth looking at again

thanks for pointing it out

matt

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 03:56 PM

and i have just noticed that now i have finished i have also become a 'senior builder' in the star rankings! my day just gets better!! apart from it has started to rain so no test driving now!!

still chuffed though and i haven't passed my sva yet!

fesycresy - 21/6/07 at 04:16 PM

Just a few observations...

The bottom shock adjuster - get some convoluted tube with a cable tie through the middle and strap it below - he won't be able to get his sphere onto the sharp edge then.

Convoluted tube across your MK grille will stop him there too.

The botom of the light mount - is it a circular edge like a mac1 - if so get some edge trim and cover it.

Good luck, Lyn.

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 04:19 PM

the bottom of the shock ajuster had been overed using an rc tyre!

I will need to put some trim around the light bit like you siad though, thanks for that!

fesycresy - 21/6/07 at 04:20 PM

I didn't mean the bottom one - although I said that

I meant the spring adjuster. The notches for the C spanner will fail.

fesycresy - 21/6/07 at 04:24 PM

RC tyre - radio controlled tyre ?

You've added that after the pictures - then we are talking about the same

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 04:25 PM

yup thats it

i did say these pics are not right up to date. i will post some when i get some in the sva part of the forum for scrutiny, just thought i would put some up now though

mconley3 - 21/6/07 at 04:34 PM

Silly question, but who still sells "new" Smith gauges? I've looked before, but never found anything.

Mark

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 04:35 PM

smiths guages were from europa. they are the smiths tailor made ones

if you look at the shocks on this pic you can see what i have done.

thanks

fesycresy - 21/6/07 at 04:44 PM

That'll do the trick !

Howlor - 21/6/07 at 04:59 PM

Just another point. I know this as I was pulled up on it!

The back lights look like LED ones, if so do they use a separate light for the brake and tail lights? Technically according to the SVA chap they need to use a separate filament each.

Steve

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 05:01 PM

no idea if they use a seperate filament but i've been told these lights will be ok for sva by premier wiring.

Would a third brake light in the middle help with this issue?

Howlor - 21/6/07 at 05:06 PM

Mine had a 3rd light and it didn't make any difference. I had swapped my bulbs for LED ones so all I did at the test was put the original filament bulbs in and he was ok with it.

I liked the idea though of a higher level brake light seen as how the others are so low and the car is low. I put mine right at the top of the back panel and it looked OK on the road.

Just a thought.

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 05:10 PM

i have bought one to put on the underside of the top roll bar but was leaving until after sva. did you have your test at notts? it may be different for me as mine are designed to hold leds not a bulb? we'll have to wait and see!

cheers

snoopy - 21/6/07 at 05:10 PM

altough headlights have been modified do they have an arrow on the lens pointing to the kerb if not then technicaly should not pass also dont think the mirrors will pass field of vision and do think a centre brake light will help

[Edited on 21/6/07 by snoopy]

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 05:12 PM

the headlights do not have an arrow but should pass. if not premier wiring said they will lend me a a set that will for the retest.

the mirrors have already been changed to kawasaki zr bike mirrors

thanks

iscmatt - 21/6/07 at 06:23 PM

thanks to everyone for there comments. I will probably post some pics in about a week asking for a full run down on what i have missed for sva.

Thanks again all

matt

NeilP - 21/6/07 at 07:09 PM

Very tidy job - Looks superb - You must be well pleased

bob - 21/6/07 at 07:29 PM

Well done matt the car looks really nice, i just hope you have more luck than me with the fuel filler on the back panel as mine is a bitch to fill up at the pump. I am planning to change to a top fill at some point, just another job on the list that never ends

ReMan - 21/6/07 at 08:12 PM

Very nice, love the dash.

RobH - 22/6/07 at 04:48 AM

Looks great Matt. Well Done

this is easily solved by a foot of hose put hose in filler neck and bend put pump nozzel in hose fill car put hose back behind seat sorted

iscmatt - 22/6/07 at 12:19 PM

I have used a bendy nozzle funnel to fill it up so far as i haven't been to a petrol pump, thanks for the warning, i'll stand by with a load of paper towels on my first attempt - if its rubbish i'll probably just use the hose technique suggested rather than move the cap.

Thanks for the great comments, i cant wait to get it on the road!! and get it to some track days and shows too

matt
