Don't know about the people, but isn't that a Zetec mounted lengthways in the middle of the car?

The new MK?

Interesting way to mount the engine, surprised it's not transverse using the normal gearbox.

Andrew

JoelP - 20/11/03 at 09:52 PM

Thats old MK and the new MK i guess, how the hell can you tell its a zetec though?!? thought badgers were blind!!

robinbastd - 20/11/03 at 09:55 PM

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE THAT PICTURE AS A PUBLICITY SHOT,unless you are Westfield.

Ian

A Badger - 20/11/03 at 09:58 PM

Blind but cunning - like a fox but more violent!

I might be wrong but the Zetec has a distinctive sort of heart shaped plastic cover over the cam belts.

chrisg - 20/11/03 at 10:14 PM

Dear Me.....

1. Mr Keenan

2. Me

3. The new MK

Zetec - yes

There should be no post along the lines of
"will I fit in the new MK?"
If Martin and I fit in it anybody will fit.

Cheers

Chris

Northy - 21/11/03 at 12:01 AM

Here we go......

1. He's had a few too many pies

2. So has he.

3. A Chassis.

Cheers

(Been at the pub all night)

Couldn't help it.

chrisg - 21/11/03 at 01:27 AM

I don't think you deserve the info and the other pictures then.

shame.

Metal Hippy - 21/11/03 at 01:37 AM

WHOOPS!

Please accept my most sincere apology, Mr. Gibbs. It was the damned Tourette's again!

More pictures, you say?

Pete

P.S. You lucky dog!

ned - 21/11/03 at 10:09 AM

glad to see the engines the right way round. very curious about the gearbox/transmission though...

Ned.

adampage - 21/11/03 at 11:14 AM

Ooh, come on, pretty please, show us the extra pictures!

Go on, I bet you're just itching to reveal all.

Adam.

Alan B - 21/11/03 at 01:29 PM

Whoa...more pics please.......

ned - 21/11/03 at 01:39 PM

found these pics on mk's website, not giving much away though...

The engine might be in the right way round, but I wouldn't like to change the cam belt!

I love the transparent driveshafts - what is their power limit?

Yes, my thought too....I guess there are good reasons behind doing it that way....maybe it is easier to accomodate bike engines that way?....longer engine bay etc.....

Noodle - 21/11/03 at 02:32 PM

easier weight distribution across the vehicle...crank inline with vehicle gives better NVH...V8's fit in...basically sexier

I'm not completely blinkered though. Pain in the bum to source parts without a fat wallet.

Neil.

ceebmoj - 21/11/03 at 03:01 PM

does any body know witch gear box that is is it the renult one with a custome bell housing?

ofr is ther a ford transaxel out ther at a resnoble cost?

James - 21/11/03 at 03:31 PM

With any luck there's enough room that you can fit a lot of FWD engines in there if need be (Presumably that's the point of the car re-design???).

Opens up a whole new world of donor possibilities what with cheap RWD stuff beginning to get a little thinner on the ground.

James

Not sure NVH is a big issue in this kind of car.......and sexier is debateable (I'm thinking Lancia Stratos and Lambo Muira)...though your points are valid, especially part sourcing...

garage19 - 21/11/03 at 04:23 PM

Trust me, you will have more of a problem sourcing that trans axle than a sierra gearbox and diff!!!

Does look very cool though.

Agreed.

Tidy_Andy - 21/11/03 at 06:12 PM

if its the transaxel off a formular ford zetec then yes it will be more difficult than going down to the scrappy an having bits off a sierra but not that difficult to find on the net, theres loads of em about.

Peteff - 21/11/03 at 09:36 PM

I like the 3"x 2" gearbox mount, have we got to have 'O' level woodwork to build this one Chris?. I don't like the idea of getting splinters during the engine installation.

yours, Pete.

chrisg - 21/11/03 at 09:55 PM

Its an audi transaxle, that's all I'm telling you-I'm still in a massive sulk, you can all bugger off

I'm telling my Mam

Christopher

Browser - 22/11/03 at 02:21 AM

I was about to say Audi but ChrisG beat me to it! A lot of folk don't realiase that Audi used the londitudinal engine/transaxle layout in the 80/90/100/Coupe/A4 and I imaging A6? Lots 'n lots of 'em in scrappies and well built too!

theconrodkid - 22/11/03 at 08:28 AM

leave the 5 pot utter nutter turbo lump on the front and see how that goes

chrisg - 22/11/03 at 11:58 AM

The second car looks like having a Rover V8/ Renault transaxle.

Yer B'stards

C

Metal Hippy - 22/11/03 at 12:06 PM

Are you the official MK Spokesman?

Not a very pc choice as the voice of the company....

sebastiaan - 22/11/03 at 12:11 PM

hmmm, the audi transaxle should (and will probably!) bolt straight onto the 1.8 4-banger turbo lump. Might be a bit pricey though.... But it will be lighter than the old 5pot turbo!

Have a look at www.donkervoort.nl, they use the audi 1.8T

I just might be tempted to get a "gt2"after the indy's finally finished, since i'm too tall to fit a GT1

Peteff - 22/11/03 at 12:58 PM

I'll side with you (if it gets me a discount)

yours, Pete.

P.S. is it Pinky and Perky making a comeback?
