What brakes do I have????
Kriss - 6/10/08 at 09:22 PM

I all, trying to work out what brakes I have as I am looking to maybe upgrade to Wilwoods.

As I dod not build my car I dont know what I have or what will be compatible with my upright. Whats the best way to work out?

Its an MK Indy with Ford marked calipers that dont look particulary big.

I hate being vauge but just dont know where to start.

Pretty sure it Sierra, but the rear xr4x4 dicks etc look bigger than whats on at the front.

Unfortunate typo there!!!

As said - pop a pic up of the caliper and upright

I hope you mean DISCS

Photos and then everyone can help, wilwoods are light but expensive, and to be honest are maybe a touch overkill for a such a light car unless you need the lighter wieght of unsprung mass.

ARG! paul you beat me!

If it's a Sierra, then I believe there are 3 options. Solid discs from the earliest cars, vented discs being most commonn or 'big' vented discs from the Cossie. I'm no expert but that's my understanding.

two pics I have

1 pic I have to see difference in size

Paul TigerB6 - 6/10/08 at 09:43 PM

Looks like the standard Sierra uprights and calipers then - solid disks from the 1.6L version?? Might be worth having a look what pads you have and simply changing them for something more exotic if they are standard. Mintex 1144's etc

Kriss - 6/10/08 at 09:45 PM

pretty sure they are ferodo's (sp)

How can i work out what Wilwood (or other uprated brake kits) are compatible with my upright?

blakep82 - 6/10/08 at 09:47 PM

if wilwood is what you want here's a start

If you want to fit new calipers

Paul TigerB6 - 6/10/08 at 09:49 PM

Darn you Blake!!!

Is there a bolt missing from your wheel?

I would start by fixing that.

blakep82 - 6/10/08 at 09:50 PM

don't get all cartoon villain on me!

Kriss - 6/10/08 at 09:52 PM

cheers chaps,

anything else worth considering? do not want to limit my options at all if they dont need to be. heard hi-spec are pretty poo. My friends busa has westfield AP's but they are silly money.

is it worth me looking for a differ MC at the same time?

I am going to bleed my brakes as no idea what fluid has been used so will chuck in some RBF600 first to see how that feels.

Paul TigerB6 - 6/10/08 at 09:57 PM

What pedal box / master cylinder setup do you have???

If you want to go the HiSpec route, then personally i'd say keep the weight down with the 9mm disk option

link here

Ultralite 4 260x09mm Sierra

Nice calipers and also have dust seals which i dont think the Wilwood kit has???

Don't fall for snake oil

Unless you have a monster of an engine the best single brake upgrade for you is simply to change the master cylinder to one with a smaller bore. ---if you want to stay with a single tandem master cylinder the master cylinder from Fiesta Mk1 997 or 1100 non-servo version. is what you want.

Alternatively you could fit bias bar pedal box with suitably sized master cylinders --

Then If find the brakes are over heating then up fit Sierra vented disc and calipers.

thankyou all for your advise. I now know what my options are, but first i think another track day is needed and give the breaks a bit more stick to see what needs improving. Bias, heating, force etc.

I think if anything I will either upgrade the disks to something with more bite and a break bleed to decent fluid, or get the Wilwood package.

Jubal - 8/10/08 at 07:40 PM

Bleed them well, given who fitted them. My brakes have always needed a damn good prod and been a bit lacking in initial bite, especially compared to willwood/hispec alternatives on other people's cars I've tried. However, they have never failed to stop me on a sixpence, can be modulated well, and have never over heated on a track day. I run standard Sierra disks and no name pads from the local factors.

Kriss - 9/10/08 at 10:44 AM

Do you run a decent fluid then del? It's early days and only one track day under it's belt so far.

Nothing special, standard DOT4. Whatever was on the shelf. I know I could have better brakes having driven other's cars but it's only by a small percentage. Not really noticeable in a track day situation.
